Between Total War: Warhammer 40,000, Dark heresy, Space Marine 3, Dark Mechanic 2and two more expansions are planned Rogue merchantit's a good time to be a fan Warhammer 40K. However, between these announcements Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4 stood out as a particularly exciting revelation. Although the original 2004 RTS wrote the book on successful Warhammer 40,000 games, Dawn of War 2 and 3 both had flaws that made the fourth entry seem like a pipe dream. Now, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4 is officially coming and it looks like a love letter to the fans of the first game.
Four factions will get there Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4 at launch: Space Marines, Necrons, Adeptus Mechanicus, and Orks. The Space Marines aren't a surprise, although the Necrons are, since the zombie-like robots haven't been playable since the first installment. The Adeptus Mechanicus also make their own Dawn of War debut having previously only appeared as a small part of the Imperial Guard faction. That being said, I personally will jump on the orc battlewagon one day Dawn of War 4 Green Tide drops and launches have never looked so amazing.

Dawn of War Definitive Edition will have players in command of large armies in a grim dark future; here are some tricks and tips for those who jump.
The orcs in Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War 4 look so much fun
In the grim darkness of the 41st millennium, there is only Waaagh!
Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4 was officially revealed during Gamescom with a trailer that unsurprisingly outshined Space Marines. However, RTS recently shared another faction CGI trailer that showed just how deadly the Orcs can be. During the movie, Ork Rok hits the Blood Raven ship and puts the Space Marines on the back foot. While reinforcements from Scout Sergeant Cyrus (voiced by Steve Blum) nearly cut off the attack, the Orcs eventually put the Blood Ravens in full retreat with the arrival of none other than Gorgutz 'Ead'Unter.
Long-time players will know Gorgutz from previous ones Dawn of War games. Indeed, aside from Blood Ravens Chapter Master Gabriel Angelos, no other character has appeared in the game more than Gorgutz, who starred as the leader of the Orcs in Dawn of War 1: Winter Assault, The Dark Crusadeand Soulstormand in again Dawn of War 3. The durable warrior is back with a vengeance, easily shrugging off bolter fire with his Mega Armor and slicing space marines in half with his Power Klaw. Towards the end of the cinematic, he also serves up perhaps the most Orcish line ever uttered to fans: “Crash fasta!”
Needless to say, this incredible display of brutality is exactly what I was hoping to see from the Orcs Warhammer 40:000: Dawn of War 4. Despite the “heavy losses” from the Blood Ravens, the Orcs operate by throwing endless amounts of Orcs at each problem until it stops moving, so this was a huge win. It's not often that Space Marines manage to completely retreat, and yet Gorgutz and his Boyz did just that. I can't wait to see what kind of trouble the Viridian Marauders get into this time, but one thing's for sure: the Orcs can handle it.
Orcs are one of the most important factions in Warhammer 40K
Within space Warhammer 40,000Orcs are one of the most commonly used factions, especially in Dawn of War. Outside of the Adeptus Astartes, they are the only faction to appear in every single Dawn of War title from day one. In fact, while Dawn of War 4 and Total War: Warhammer 40,000 likely to gain more factions in future DLC, Space Marines and Orks are the only two factions to appear in both upcoming RTS games at launch.

Although none can hold a candle to the Adeptus Astartes, only the Aeldari and Chaos Space Marines can match the Orks in terms of attendance. However, while the Aeldari are inside Total War: Warhammer 40,000broke their streak of appearing in every single Dawn of War game at the beginning of the upcoming sequel and the Chaos Space Marines who were added later Dawn of War 2: Chaos Rising expansion, were also absent in Dawn of War 3. Orcs, on the other hand, are always there when it's time to fight.
However, the inclusion of Orcs is actually important for another big reason. The grimdark universe is full of systematic brutality and pyrrhic victories, and there are very few examples of true heroism. Warhammer 40,000. To an environment full of sadistic cruelty, emotionless utilitarianism and mass destruction, the Orcs bring a unique brand of slapstick that is desperately needed. While everyone loves watching a Space Marine clean house, there's something uniquely delightful about watching the Boyz's reckless enthusiasm, swashbuckling technology, and absurdist humor when they're back in town.
What do the other Warhammer 40,000 factions have going for them?
While I'm excited to get stuck into the Boyz joke, the other starting factions Dawn of War 4 look amazing too. The Blood Ravens Space Marine Chapter has fallen on hard times Dawn of War series, so it will be great to see how and if they bounce back. Their powerful and versatile units are always fun to play – and being able to focus on fewer units is always an advantage when battles get really hectic.
After appearing only in The Dark Crusade extension and later Soulstormit's been over 15 years since the Necrons have been playable Dawn of Warso their return is especially exciting. Their new Power Matrix mechanic seems to work like Zerg Creep StarCraftwhich should be fun to play with. Heavy and powerful Necrons promise a unique gameplay loop and it will be interesting to see how they perform in a modern RTS game.
However, the brand new Adeptus Mechanicus of Warhammer 40,000 fame can be the most interesting. Advanced vehicles, noosphere networks and compact bases mean Dawn of War newbies can be the new turtle kings in RTS. Tech Priests of Mars sound like they provide a very different playstyle than any other faction in the land Dawn of War history, let alone three more coming when the fourth game launches.
As for future factions, provided Dawn of War 4 does well enough to get DLC, the Imperial Guard seems to be a rip-off since they already appear as NPCs in the game. Likewise, Aeldari and Chaos Space Marines wouldn't be a surprise considering their importance to the setting and their track record in past games. This means that lead game designer Elliott Verbiest personally raised the Tau and Tyranids Warhammer 40,000 like some of his favorite factions. Hopefully, Dawn of War 4 is a huge success, so all of these and more may eventually be added to the game in DLC and expansions.
