Doom Developer id Software is celebrating its 35th anniversary with a special announcement

id Software released a video celebrating its 35th anniversary while also teasing upcoming content. Founded in 1991 by four members of the Louisiana software company Softdisk, id Software made a major technological breakthrough in video game development, specifically on the PC, and redefined the first-person shooter genre several times over. id Software executives thank fans for 35 years and announce more

On id Software's Twitter account, the studio released a new video from studio director Marty Stratton and game director Hugo Martin celebrating the studio's 35th anniversary and hinting at new things to come. In it, Stratton and Martin thanked “the best fans in the world” for all their support of id Software over the years, and thanked their partners across Microsoft Gaming and ZeniMax. While the duo stopped short of naming names, they also thank the developers who came before them and the founders of id, citing Adrian Carmack, John Carmack, Tom Hall and John Romero.

The pair also hinted that the studio will be doing some special things to celebrate the anniversary, with Stratton even saying the team had “a lot to celebrate this week” with fans. He also noted that the team will spend 2026 celebrating “this anniversary and many more,” though he didn't elaborate on the studio's upcoming plans. Martin also echoed Stratton's comments, telling fans to “stay tuned” as the studio has “much more” in store.

While id Software may have a lot to reveal in 2026 to celebrate its 35th anniversary, a new major title in FATE a franchise may not be an option. The studio just came out DOOM: The Dark Ages last year, so his next major title has probably only just begun development and won't be ready for a few years. While id Software may release some new downloadable content for the game this year, the 2026 celebration will likely focus on discounts on currently available titles as well as behind-the-scenes looks at the studio's history.

Marty Stratton's comment about the studio celebrating “this anniversary and many more” offers hope that the studio has some big surprises up its sleeve. Notably, 2026 will also be the 30th anniversary Earthquake franchise, another remarkable series of first-person shooters. If the next main line Earthquake title isn't ready, perhaps id Software is preparing some new content for previously released remasters, or even a full remake, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of this landmark shooter.
