After 13 years of being everyone's least favorite platform, EA is finally shutting down Origin on April 17th. As of this date, anyone still using Origin will need to switch to the EA app or lose access to their game libraries.
This means that any EA games purchased through Origin will now be unplayable if you are using a 32-bit operating system, as the EA app only works on 64-bit operating systems. However, if you're upgrading, you should be able to find all your games in the EA app after switching from Origin.
Origin is finally shutting down on April 17th
EA's incredibly unpopular distribution platform lasted 13 years
“17. In April 2025, Origin will shut down as Microsoft has stopped supporting 32-bit software,” reads a page on EA's website detailing how users can keep their games. “If you're using Origin, you need to upgrade to the EA app, which requires a 64-bit version of Windows.”
As stated on the page, your games should be waiting for you once you log into the app using the same credentials you'd use for Origin. You may need to reinstall some mods if you've played with them, but otherwise you should be good to go.
Origin was introduced in 2011 but often frustrated PC gamers. Many gamers just don't like having to use more than one store, especially if they already have so many games on Steam and only need to download more for a handful of titles. This was compounded by EA making many of their games exclusive to Origin, which returned in 2020. Now, with games that launched during this period of Origin exclusivity already being ported to competitors like Steam and GOG, you may only need EA application. for your older purchases.
Origin's demise isn't too surprising. Of course, EA notes that Windows is dropping support for 32-bit operating systems, but it seemed like EA was already ready to make that move. After all, Origin is incompatible with Xbox Game Pass, which requires linking to an EA App account to access titles with EA Play.
