Sony turned what started out as a relatively quiet week in the gaming world into an absolute blast by announcing its biggest game state in history. PlayStation is set to showcase a number of first- and third-party titles later this week as part of a showcase that promises to bring some big reveals and updates during the 60-minute run.
This presentation has been rumored for quite some time, especially since the console giant has almost nothing on its release at the moment. So we hope it brings a lot of big news along with some welcome surprises. Here's a timeline where you can watch it unfold, along with all the things we'd like to see happen during the show.
When is the February game state and how can I track it?
The upcoming State of Play will be held on Thursday, February 12 at 2:00 PM PT/5:00 PM ET/11:00 PM CEST/10:00 PM GMT and can be seen on PlayStation's official YouTube and Twitch channels.
If you'd rather not tune in to the live action, most of the trailers will be available online in due course, and we'll be covering all the major news right here on TheGamer.
What to expect in the February state of the game
With the upcoming State of Play promising over an hour of news, we can expect plenty of variety from the announcements it has in store. First and foremost, I imagine Sony will want to provide some updates to their first-party lineup over the next few months.
The main one is Marvel's Wolverine from Insomniac Games, which was originally revealed a few years ago and has been in development for even longer. I'm at the point where I'd love to have the game dropped in my lap so I can judge it for myself instead of watching more trailers.
Fortunately, I wouldn't be surprised if State of Play finally gave players a concrete release date this week, along with additional gameplay footage and details. Previously written for a fall 2026 release, I'd love to finally have a date that pops up on my calendar. Maybe this is a good time to show us what else the studio has been working on besides the Marvel series? I would kill for a first look at the next Ratchet & Clank.
While I don't expect it to launch this year, it's been a while since we've had an update on Naughty Dog's Intergalactic: The Heretical Prophet. First revealed at The Game Awards 2024, it's about time we got our first comprehensive look at its gameplay. In fact, I wouldn't be too shocked if it ended up being one of the big players of the show with a few minutes given to Neil Druckmann making his first appearance. I want to know about the story, the characters and what exactly we will be doing in the game itself.
Dear Naughty Dog, please don't announce a remake of The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered. It would really dampen the mood.
Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls has already received a comprehensive update on its Steam page ahead of this week's launch, and given how hard PlayStation has pushed it in the past, expect it to make an appearance. My money is on a confirmed release date and plenty of major characters and stage reveals. We might even see an open beta or a more extensive playable demo that hardcore fans can take to the skies.
Bungie and Sony are probably sweating bullets about the upcoming release Marathonbut it would be poor form not to at least mention this high-profile title at the show, given that the minds behind Destiny and Halo helped bring it to life. After the success of Arc Raiders, part of me hopes that this stylish take on the extraction shooter has a real chance at success, but so much of the well has already been poisoned that it's hard to predict how things will play out when the game comes out next month. Expect it to show up in some form.
Speaking of games that no one will play, this seems like a great time to reveal star field'It has long been rumored to come to PS5. Xbox has been porting its back catalog thick and fast to Sony's platform in recent years, with some major releases like Fable even set to arrive on day one. Although Starfield wasn't exactly a critical darling when it first arrived on Xbox and PC in 2023, I bet there are still plenty of PlayStation gamers out there who would pay full price for Bethesda's new RPG.
All of the above predictions aside, I've compiled some lighting below, including a number of things I expect to be at the show before we dive into more exciting pipedream announcements:
-
Onimusha: Way of the Sword is finally getting a release date
-
Capcom gives us a final look at Resident Evil Requiem ahead of launch
-
Saros gets even more gameplay and a playable demo
-
PlayStation VR 2 is never once mentioned as the final nail in the coffin
-
Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis gets a deeper look at gameplay
-
March's PlayStation Plus games are revealed and showcased
-
Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is finally confirmed for PC
-
Ghost of Yotei gets multiplayer or expansion news
What we'd like to see in the February state of the game
Now, I've been professional and reasonable with my expectations, please bear with me if I go into a fangirl trance for a few paragraphs. It's been almost two years since its release Final Fantasy 7 Rebirthwith a launch date for the Switch 2 and Xbox versions recently announced. So, with the reboot trilogy now reaching more people than ever, isn't it time to reveal the third entry?
State of Play has become a regular home for such announcements in the past, and I'd bet my bottom dollar that Final Fantasy 7 Reunion, Revenge, Reclaim, Resolve, Ratatouille, or whatever the hell it ends up being called, will be a major mic drop for the final reveal. The team behind it have already said it's going to be a big year for the Remake project, and if they intend to release the final chapter to celebrate the original game's 30th anniversary next year, why not give us our first sneak peek this week?
Adding to that pile of JRPG revelations would be nice to see as well Kingdom Hearts 4 to offer some evidence of life after several years without major news. It's been revealed so we know it's in development, but literally any hint as to how far along it is and if people can expect to play it before the end of the decade would be amazing. Speaking of which, what about the next main Final Fantasy series? It's possible that Square Enix wants to get these other projects out of the way first before figuring out what's next for the brand's franchise.
A few more far-fetched predictions for fun games — Devil May Cry 6, Fallout 3 Remastered, an expansion or sequel to Astro Bot, Gang of Dragon, and Halo: Campaign Evolved.
Sony Santa Monica is another first-party studio that must be hard at work on new projects right now, although we don't know anything about them. With Norwegian Sega now behind us, God of War fans hope the series will adopt Egyptian or Japanese mythology. Time will tell, but part of me also wouldn't object to the studio tackling a new property considering all the creative talent that calls it home. There's also a long-rumored spin-off that's likely to be a metroidvania that revisits Greek mythology for the first time in decades. I would love to see it finally appear and potentially even with a 2026 release date.
My heart also waits for news of the potential Bloody remaster, or at least an idea of what Bluepoint has been doing throughout the PS5 generation. He wowed us at launch with the excellent Demon's Souls remake, but has been quiet since then. While this is a real deal, if the PS5 is planned to be the primary platform for GTA 6, perhaps this trailer is the perfect vehicle to announce this partnership to the world?
With 60 minutes to go, I've no doubt the state of the game will be packed to bursting with both predictable and unexpected announcements this week, and if we're lucky, a few of the things speculated above will pop up and make our day.
