Game development can be a very fickle thing, filled with meddling, budget concerns, and general issues of playability. As such, it’s not always an easy road to get a game made, and it’s an even bumpier road in ensuring that said game is released to critical and commercial acclaim. With that in mind, there have been some creative games announced for the PlayStation 4 over the years that looked exceptional, building hype from all angles, only to die a quiet death or enter a status of limbo in which nobody can say when or if they will ever release. Below is a list of cancelled, abandoned, or otherwise quiet games that should have released for the PS4, but most certainly aren’t coming on the old generation.
Silent Hills
Kojima and Del Toro Could Have Been a Dream Team of Frights
Starting out as P.T. (playable teaser), fans around the world were intrigued by the mystery and terrified by what awaited inside, only to discover an explosion of hype with a collaboration between Hideo Kojima, Guillermo del Toro, and Norman Reedus for a Silent Hill project titled Silent Hills. Having Kojima and del Toro lend their talented creative hands to Silent Hills was a dream come true for many, but unfortunately, the game was cancelled in 2015, 3 years after it was announced. The cancellation still scars many players, and all that’s left is the P.T. demo that’s inaccessible to those without it already downloaded.
There’s hardly anything known about what Silent Hills could have been, but the fan reception from P.T. was extremely positive, showing that the horrors, puzzles, and Kojima-esque nature would have made for one of the most memorable horror experiences alongside 2001’s Silent Hill 2. With Silent Hills forever cancelled, players still have hope for Kojima in horror thanks to OD, an Xbox Game Studios published game from Kojima and Jordan Peele that doesn’t have a release date, but is definitely not going to share the fate of Silent Hills.

LucasArts was a pioneer of the video game scene, creating stellar experiences across a multitude of IPs. Unfortunately, the Disney acquisition of Lucasfilm meant that most of their in-progress projects had to be shelved permanently, and Star Wars 1313 was one of those projects caught in the crossfire of studio restructuring. First announced in 2012 and cancelled a year later with Disney’s acquisition, players held out hope that the project was simply on hold and was awaiting revival from an outside studio, but this dream died a long time ago in a galaxy not-so far away.
The game itself was highly desired, for who at the time didn’t want more Star Wars? Playing as a young Boba Fett in the underground and crime-riddled streets of Coruscant seemed like a blast, and both the trailer and leaked gameplay looked immense, like a modern Star Wars: Bounty Hunter with fun shooting mechanics and exploration. Even Lucasfilm CEO Kathleen Kennedy had nothing but positive things to say about Star Wars 1313 as of December 2015, but as of 2025, it can be expected that this is a project best left behind.

A noble mercenary takes on a mysterious world, where RPG and action-adventure elements blend in such a creatively profound world that you’ll never want to leave. That is, if Little Devil Inside ever releases. The style of the game looks wonderful, as do the mechanics and combat involved. There seems to be such a rich story and world waiting for players in this game from Neostream Interactive, but the hype has died down a tad since it’s been in development for over a decade at this point.
With some trailers and even gameplay releasing in February 2024, and the development team shrinking a tad, concerns over Little Devil Inside‘s release continue to grow, especially since it was supposed to release in 2018, and then 2021, 2022, and so on… With the PS5 era set to end soon, it’s unlikely that this Unreal Engine 5 game will be released for the PS4 or that it will be released at all, which would be a real shame considering the creativity behind it and Sony’s own backing of the project.
Beyond Good and Evil 2
An Expansive, Open-World AAA Bounty, 15+ Years in the Making
If you think waiting for GTA 6 is bad, try being a Beyond Good and Evil fan! Beyond Good and Evil 2 serves as a prequel to the original, and has been in development for over 15 years now, exceeding the development time (and perhaps cost) of the previous record holder, Duke Nukem Forever. Beyond Good and Evil 2 looks very ambitious and very rewarding for fans who want to explore planets, meet strange new characters, and enjoy a great story. Unfortunately, these promises are met with a layer of grief, as the creative director, Emile Morel, died in 2023, leading to a change in creative directors back in 2024.
Beyond Good and Evil 2 seems to be making slow but steady progress after 15 years, and while the game was announced in 2008 and then re-announced in 2017, it’s been pure radio silence since then. Ubisoft still seems committed to this dream, but as of 2025, that’s all Beyond Good and Evil 2 is – a dream that players one day wish to try for themselves. Unfortunately, everything seen from Beyond Good and Evil 2 looks far too expansive and demanding to be restricted to the PS4 era.

Telltale Games Continues The Fables of Bigby Wolf, But Will They?

Telltale Games saw immense success after The Walking Dead, and that success continued with The Wolf Among Us, a far darker story involving the detective work of Sheriff Bigby Wolf in Fabletown, a community in New York City involving fairy tales, folklore, and the difficulties of being among them. There was an incredible selection of lore thanks to Bill Willingham’s Fables comic series from DC, and the complex characters really carried over well for this interactive story game. Unfortunately, Telltale Games closed its studio back in 2018, but was later revived by LCG Entertainment, where The Wolf Among Us 2 was proudly announced once more in 2019.
With stunning new graphics at the helm, and not much else to show, The Wolf Among Us 2 seems to be in quiet development at Telltale Games, but there really isn’t much to say about it, other than it’s unlikely to be seen on PS4 due to that console generation being too old by the point of the game’s arrival, if that ever comes. With Adhoc doing much of the writing and cinematics for The Wolf Among Us 2, and the success they’ve seen from Dispatch, there’s hope for Bigy Wolf and the cast of Fables to return, or is this fairytale set to end without a happily ever after?
The Last of Us Online
Factions Provided Thrilling PvP For a Snuffed Out Live-Service Game
- Developers: Naughty Dog
- Announced: 2018
- Cancelled: December 2023
While everyone knows The Last of Us for its stunning and gritty story of humanity in a world that’s lost it all, the first game really shines with the multiplayer PvP, Factions. Factions was an unexpected hit, perhaps from players and Naughty Dog alike. The mode was extremely fun, in part due to its survival mechanics, and how the gameplay of The Last of Us translates to multiplayer. With all of that said, The Last of Us Part 2 didn’t come with a multiplayer mode, but one was announced as a later expansion in 2018. However, a few changes led to The Last of Us Online, a live-service PvP experience that could have been something special, if not for its cancellation in 2023.
Over 5 years of waiting and plenty of ambition from Naughty Dog led to grief from fans and developers alike, for the beloved multiplayer would never see the light of day. With the live-service model dying out and seeing many studios and games shut down, it’s no surprise that The Last of Us Online never got a chance to shine, as it wouldn’t have been worth the risk among the larger scope of other projects from the studio. Still, it’s a shame that the PS4 era only has the Factions of The Last of Us Remastered to look to.
Agent
Rockstar Games Cancels an Exciting New IP Involving Espionage and Cold War Assassinations
- Developers: Rockstar North
- Announced: July 2007
- Cancelled: November 2018
Agent was an early attempt from Rockstar North to be an open-world spy thriller set in the Cold War of the 1970s, where players are placed into a world of counter-intelligence, politically motivated assassinations, and espionage action. While initially announced in 2007 for the PlayStation 3, and with complete radio silence throughout early development stages, fans were hopeful that the PlayStation 4 generation would see this stealth game from Rockstar come to life, especially since Agent had its license and trademark renewed in both 2013 and 2017. Unfortunately, the game was swiftly abandoned and canceled in 2018, much to the disappointment of many who were interested in a new IP from Rockstar that wasn’t Grand Theft Auto.
While many held out for years that something would come of Agent, the pressure to finish Grand Theft Auto 5 left Agent behind, and the trademark was abandoned despite renewal. Even Rockstar Games’ co-founder, Dan Houser, touched upon Agent‘s cancellation in October 2025 and said that Agent simply wouldn’t work as a film-like story with Rockstar’s signature open-world format. It’s a shame, and while Rockstar might explore new IPs when GTA 6 finally releases in 2026 (or beyond), Agent seems to be one idea that won’t stick around.
Deep Down
A Dungeon Crawl Adventure Filled with Fantasy, Yet It’s a Fantasy In Itself to See This Game Release
- Developers: Capcom
- Announced: 2013
- Cancelled Status: Unknown, likely cancelled as of 2020
Action RPGs are all the rage, so when Yoshinori Ono of Street Fighter fame revealed Deep Down, fans were ecstatic to see what awaited this single-player or 4-player co-op adventure. Deep Down seemed perfect for the PS4 era, in which players would enter into medieval/fantasy dungeons, procedurally generated to keep you forever on your toes, while you hunt for loot and battle dangerous fantasy enemies like dragons, mimics, and ogres. While what was briefly shown seemed like an immense blast, that brief look was all that players would get, as Deep Down went into the deep dark of development hell, to the point where the trademark was abandoned in 2020.
Deep Down hadn’t been completely abandoned by 2019, but the departure of Yoshinoro Ono from Capcom in 2020 left Deep Down cast into oblivion. Nobody knows what became of Deep Down, and while the game still exists somewhere in some state, and a team is hopeful that one day they might return to it, it seems that Deep Down isn’t going to be for the PS4 generation, and it might not even be for the next generation either.
