Expedition 33 is already breaking the record for giving out massive game prizes

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is making history at The Game Awards even before the show goes live in December, breaking a huge record. When it first came out, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 instantly stole the hearts of many players with its combination of great gameplay, amazing performance, top-notch graphics and score selection, and a heart-pounding story. On paper, the game has it all, and when it was released in April this year, many gamers were already calling it the game of the year.

Fast forward to today, November 17, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is nominated for a GOTY at The Game Awards and fans believe it will win regardless of the competition. Other candidates for game of the year are Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, Donkey Kong Banana, Hades 2, Hollow Knight: Silksongand Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. While the list is impressive and each game has its strengths, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 sweeps away its competition by setting an incredible new record for total nominations.

Say hello to the new TGA record holder, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was nominated in 10 categories and has a total of 12 nominations for The Game Awards 2025, the most in the event's history. These are:

  • Game of the year
  • Best Game Direction
  • The best story
  • Best Art Direction
  • Best score and music
  • The best audio design
  • Best performance (3 nominations out of 6)
  • The best indie game
  • Best Debut Indie Game
  • The best RPG

Specifically nominated for Best Performance at the TGA are Ben Starr as Verso, Charlie Cox as Gustave and Jennifer English as Maelle. This also breaks another record as there have never been three nominations for a single game in any given category.

In most editions of the TGA, there have been several instances where outstanding games have been nominated in multiple categories. A few examples:

  • Astro Bot and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth in TGA 2024, each with 7 nominations, and Astro Bot to be a GOTY winner
  • Baldur's Gate 3 at TGA 2023, with 9 nominations and a GOTY winner
  • Elden Ring and God of War Ragnarok at TGA 2022, with 5 nominations and a GOTY winner for Elden Ringand 8 nominations for God of War Ragnarok
  • The last of us part 2 at TGA 2020, with 11 nominations and a GOTY winner, which was the previous record holder before this year
  • God of War and Red Dead Redemption 2 in TGA 2018, each with 8 nominations, and God of War to be a GOTY winner

Given the history of games with most nominations at The Game Awards often also GOTY winners, this bodes well for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33because he deserves the hype and praise he gets. It's also great to see not only Gustavo nominated for Best Performance, but also Verso and Maelle. Charlie Cox's performance in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is phenomenal, but it's just another brick in the wall that makes the game great.
