This week's Game Awards brought plenty of exciting gameplay reveals for the titles that will make up the next few years of gaming releases. Some like High Guardianare just around the corner, while others, like Exodusthey are a bit further. The good news, however, is that one title that many thought wouldn't be released until 2030 is coming sooner.
Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic was one of the biggest titles revealed during The Game Awards 2025. Its existence was a well-kept secret heading into the Geoff Keighley-produced show, and it wasn't until the title card was fully revealed that fans in the audience (and watching online) went wild. And then when the original was revealed Knights of the Old Republic Director Casey Hudson is working on the project, enthusiasm has shot through the roof.
Of course, enthusiasm for Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic he eventually relented once fans realized the game was likely in early development and wouldn't be released for several years. It's unclear how far along the game is and when it's planned for release, but Bloomberg's Jason Schreier believes the game won't appear until 2030, and that's an “optimistic” estimate on his part.
It's reasonable to assume that Fate of the Old Republic will take a long time to develop, and a release year of 2030 makes sense. It's disappointing that gamers will have to wait this long to experience the next chapter of the Old Republic franchise, but that's what many of these Game Awards trailers do: build hype for projects that are very early. Or so we thought.

While not directly citing Schreier's reporting, Casey Hudson said as much on social media. Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic won't require such a long wait. He says the game will be out by 2030 and jokes that it “doesn't get any younger.”

It's unclear if he has any sources that have painted a picture of where the game is in development and what its release goals are, but with only a CG trailer to show, it's a reasonable assumption. And Schreier is optimistic because he knows the reality of game development, where even the most conservative plans can sometimes fall apart as a project progresses. It feels a bit like tearing my hair out when it comes Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republicbut the release date. The game probably won't be released in 2027, otherwise the trailer would have a date on it. That means 2028 is the earliest we might see the game, and that's still generous. So maybe 2029 is where Casey Hudson's Arcanaut Studios is looking.
Only time will tell when Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic release and who is “right” about when the game will ship. Even then, Casey Hudson and the development team are likely intent on getting the game into players' hands as soon as possible, but that doesn't mean there won't be roadblocks to release.
