Gears of War: E-Day is on the horizon, reportedly launching sometime this year, and hopefully we'll get a release date during the big Xbox preview this summer. However, for many people, Gears of War: E-Day isn't really the game many wanted from the series, as Gears 5 left a pretty significant cliffhanger that many people understandably want resolved.
Shortly after E-Day was announced, The Coalition made it pretty clear that they were “not backing down from this story in any way,” seemingly promising a return to a numbered Gears game eventually, but according to JD voice actor Liam McIntyre, the studio was close to going in that direction anyway.
JD Voice Actor says Gears 6 was a possibility
In a conversation with fans on Twitter (thanks to Insider Gaming), McIntyre began by saying that he loves the people working at The Coalition and that he hopes they do “the game that he feels like nails, that Gears is experiencing, that everyone loves”, and that it would eventually lead back to a trilogy. When asked about there being no trilogy right now, McIntyre said that Gears 6 was being considered.
“We did Gears 4 and 5 and there was a suggestion that there might be a Gears 6,” says McIntyre. “But the team wanted to try something new, I understand. And honestly, it looks great. I can't wait to play.” It's totally understandable to want to take a break from such a big story, even if it's just to avoid burnout. We know that video game development takes a long time, and creating an entire trilogy can easily take a solid 15 years of your life these days. If The Coalition wanted to take some time to do something else, then that's fine by me, although I'm begging them to actually resolve that cliffhanger.
