Gege Akutami Quietly Gives a Big Update on the Future of Jujutsu Kaisen

Gege Akutami has become one of the biggest names in the manga industry. The prolific author is the creator of the iconic shonen series known as Jujutsu Kaisen. Jujutsu Kaisen has definitely taken the world by storm, being one of the most successful manga and anime of all time, competing with big hits like Demon Slayer and My Hero Academia. Unfortunately, Gege Akutami concluded his story in 2024 in a seemingly rushed manner.

Gege returned in 2025 with a short sequel series titled Jujutsu Kaisen: Modulo that followed the events of the decade after the conclusion of his original story. Modulo was always meant to be a short serialization, and now it's fast approaching. However, fans would welcome a new full-length work by Gage Akutami. Interestingly, his new message in Weekly Shonen Jump could hint at a new sequel to Jujutsu Kaisen or maybe even an entirely new manga story.

Gege Akutami confirms that he wants to continue creating more manga

A few days ago, the main Weekly Shonen Jump manga, Yusei Matsui's The Elusive Samurai, ended. The elusive samurai ended with 238 chapters and fans were deeply saddened to see him part ways. For those who don't know, Yusei Matsui was also the creator of another successful series known as Assassination Classroom. Due to his pedigree, many mangaka were quick to leave him messages thanking him for his work. Among them was Gege Akutami from Jujutsu Kaisen.

“I also want to face the manga consistently, just like Matsui-sensei!” — Gege Akutami

Gege Akutami stated that, like Yusei Matsui, he wants to continue drawing manga. It can only mean that Gege definitely plans to work on the mangaone way or another.

Gege Akutami could hint at a new continuation of JJK after Modulo

Gege Akutami's message of wanting to face more manga brought up many possibilities for the future of the Jujutsu Kaisen series. Jujutsu Kaisen is Gege Akutami's first manga and of course it was a big success. The series currently has over 150 million copies in circulation, making it one of the best-selling manga worldwide. This has made Gege quite a big name in the manga industry, and Weekly Shonen Jump would love to see him stick around for as long as possible, especially with his original work.

Jujutsu Kaisen is already an established franchise, and given the potential the world still has and the message Gege has delivered, this could be a hint for a continuation of the Jujutsu Kaisen story. Jujutsu Kaisen could be expanded through another sequel, or perhaps even a prequel.

It could also be that Jujutsu Kaisen module the manga is simply extended, given that the series still has plenty of exciting content to offer fans. Gege could also choose to cover the events that took place between the original JJK series and Modulo since there is a 68 year time difference. This would be the perfect opportunity for Gege Akutami to expand on his original cast of characters. As for the prequel, there are many interesting eras of Jujutsu that could be showcased as far before what fans saw in JJK, such as the Heian Era. Fans and Shonen Jump alike would definitely welcome anything new Gege comes up with for JJK, especially seeing the current hype around Modulo.

Gege Akutami might come up with a brand new series

While Jujutsu Kaisen getting a new story is definitely a possibility, Gege may have other plans this time. As with many managaks, Gege could also start over. Jujutsu Kaisen was his greatest work, Gege is a great mangaka who could showcase his talent by creating a brand new story.

  • Many mangaka have found great success with their second stories, such as creators like Akira Toriyama with Dragon Ball or Togashi with HxH. Even Yusei Matsui, who Gege commented on earlier this week, has seen great success in his second manga.

It's hard to imagine a new Gege Akutami story to top Jujutsu Kaisen, but it's not impossible. It's not yet clear what kind of story Gege would pursue if he were to create a new manga, but it's safe to say that JJK fans would at least want to try it out.

Either way, any new manga project Gege comes up with could very well be illustrated by someone else like Yuji Iwasaki, especially considering how much Gege's health suffered towards the end of JJK's original run. Gege and Shonen Jump will eventually announce his next work, so fans should stay tuned.
