Amazon Prime recently revealed a first look at a studio official God of War A television series that is set to be adapted by Santa Monica Studios God of War (2018) (and probably God of War Ragnarök). Fan reaction to the first image – featuring Ryan Hurst and Callum Vinson as Kratos and Atreus – has been mostly positive, but not everyone is happy.
God of War creator David Jaffe posted a new video on his YouTube channel on February 28, 2026 expressing some disappointment with Amazon Prime's live action God of War series. While Jaffe has faith in showrunner Ron Moore to eventually do the series justice, he thinks Ryan Hurst as Kratos “just looks stupid.”

Anyone who knows David Jaffe knows he doesn't hold back when it comes to criticism. Jaffe called the first look at Kratos and Atreus “terrible” and “so bad in so many ways”. Ultimately, Jaffe's biggest problem is the choice of image that Amazon uses to market the series.
“If you're going to reveal to most people a brand new character that you hope will carry your series for the first time and they've never actually seen it before, and that's how you introduce them?”
In the reveal, Jaffe mocked Ryan Hurst's pose and facial expression, saying he looked like he was “f***ing in the woods” and “just looks stupid”. Some fans expressed disappointment with the casting of Ryan Hurst, especially his beard, which Jaffe only used to add fuel to the fire.

David Jaffe still believes in the God of War TV series
For what it's worth, David Jaffe had nice things to say about Amazon God of War series, though the initial reveal was ultimately disappointing for him. Jaffe praised showrunner Ronald D. Moore, saying, “Ron Moore is amazing and a “hugely talented guy,” before saying, “I have absolutely no doubt it's going to be a good show.”
Ronald D. Moore has an impressive track record in television Star Trek: The Next Generation, Deep Space NineHBO Carnival, Battlestar Galactica, Outlanderand For all mankind. By all accounts, it's more than likely from Amazon God of War the show will be better than bad with Moore at the helm.
