After months of rumors, Santa Monica not only decided it was ready to show the world its 2D God of War game during last week's State of Play, but released it. Since then, it's been hard to gauge what people think of Sons of Sparta. Now that the review scores are starting to settle in, the consensus, at least critically, is that this is the weakest God of War game we've seen yet.
God Of War Sons Of Sparta does not review well
There have been no reviews at launch since the Sons of Sparta shadow fell. User scores came in pretty quickly and at 8.2, while not great compared to most other God of War games, it could have been a lot worse. Much worse seems to have been saved for the spinoff ratings, as Sons of Sparta sits at a 70 on OpenCritic and an even worse 69 on Metacritic.
To put it into perspective, while its user score is better than God of War: Ascension, Sons of Sparta has taken the crown of worst rated game in the series since its PS3 predecessor in 13 years. Ascension has an 80 on Metacritic, meaning that even if a couple of perfect scores for Sons of Sparta find their way into the wild, which seems unlikely, it's hard to see the latest game getting another 11 points to increase that average.
The difference between Sons of Sparta and Ascension is actually quite small compared to a typical God of War rating. Multiple games scored over 90 points. Both Norse games have a 94 on Metacritic, along with each of the Greek saga staples, all of which scored 92 or higher.
This bodes well for the remake trilogy if Santa Monica is up to the task.
Despite the disappointing review score, some of you love it
When it comes to Sons of Sparta, the overarching feeling seems to be one of confusion. It's been rumored for so long and then they just threw it away, and a game that doesn't live up to the lofty standards set by almost every other God of War game that has preceded it in over 20 years.
Poor review scores aside, Sons of Sparta has its fans. As mentioned, its user scores on both Metacritic and the PlayStation Store are much better than its review scores. There were also enough dedicated people to unlock what is a pretty grueling Platinum within days of release.
