The gaming industry has had a tumultuous year and it's not over yet. Just days before this news came from Rockstar Games, Amazon announced that it would cut 14,000 positions at its company, while Microsoft cut thousands of jobs over the course of the year. However, they are not the only two as this has been a widespread trend throughout the video game industry and now Rockstar Games is joining the list.

Rockstar Games is laying off workers, but the reason is being discussed

Reports revealed that Rockstar Games laid off 30 to 40 employees in its UK and Canadian offices on October 30. Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games, claimed that the layoffs were due to “gross misconduct” and that it supports Rockstar's decision to lay off the employees. However, this claim is disputed by the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain, IWGB. According to IWGB president Alex Marshall, all of the fired Rockstar Games workers were either part of a union or trying to organize, and also belonged to a union group on the chat platform Discord. Marshall said the firings were a “flagrant disregard for the law” and “a blatant and ruthless act of union busting.”

While Rockstar and Take-Two say it's not a union, this isn't the first time major developers and publishers have been blamed in the industry. Companies like Activision Blizzard and Nintendo have faced such allegations before, though some have been proven to be false. When Dragon Age: The Veilguard was in development, all QA testers belonging to the unions they worked on Dragon Age they were released. They were notably the first Canadian gaming industry union to exist.

Unfortunately, regardless of why these game developers were fired, they're far from the first in 2025 and likely won't be the last before the year draws to a close. Recent shootings have been blamed on everything from a changing market to overwork in the COVID era, and one of the latest concerns for developers is the use of artificial intelligence in game development. Many have speculated that AI may be used to take over some responsibilities and roles within game development studios as technology advances, potentially eliminating even more jobs in 2026 and beyond.
