Heartopia Developer XD Inc. released an official statement and apology after removing an in-game NPC animation that sparked backlash from players. The move may close the door on the scene itself, but there's no end to fan criticism over how the studio chose to explain Heartopia controversy.
The original problem centers on the sequence bound to one of the Heartopiapoisonous mushrooms. Specifically, XD recently added a quest where Kapil, the Black NPC, accidentally swallows a mushroom and starts hooting and dancing. The animation caused controversy among players, with some arguing that it evoked racist comparisons to monkeys rather than conveying the intended effect of simple disorientation.

Heartopia Dev apologizes for Kapil's animation, says it was not intended to have racist connotations
The Heartopia the developer responded to the backlash with a statement posted on the game's official Discord server in early March 2026. An XD representative explained that the intention behind the animation was to illustrate the dizziness and general “loss of bodily control” that commonly stems from poisoning. After an initial wave of player complaints, the Chinese studio removed Kapil's animation. “We sincerely apologize to anyone who may have felt offended,” the developer said.

The early wave of social media reactions to the official announcement suggests some Heartopia players believe the apology was inadequate. “Nowhere in this apology do they mention the racist undertones that the scene had,” writes Reddit user vRileyyy. “That's the problem. Responding to this sentiment, Reddit user SteamBat_ said that Kapil also seemingly “talks like a caveman” in at least one version of the game, casting further doubt on whether the developer intended to “accurately depict the symptoms of vertigo” by making him howl and dance like a monkey.
The ongoing backlash from players seems to be exacerbated by XD's decision to crack down on follow-up questions on the game's official Discord server. “Why even apologize when you're just going to silence people who are trying to understand the problem,” asked Reddit user Mars_Maiden in one highly positive comment. They went on to call this behavior “insane” and suggest that it implies Heartopia not a safe space for people of color. XD has not provided any follow-up comments to clarify its apology or moderation decisions made after its release. The crackdown on Discord may be an attempt to steer discussion in general channels back on track, but even if it is, some fans say it should be more transparent.
Why even apologize if you're just going to silence people who are trying to understand the problem?
Reports from players on social media suggest that moderators have even deleted or hidden the feedback channel Heartopiaofficial Discord server amid backlash after Kapil animation apology. Game Rant could not confirm this, as a channel called #suggestion appears to have been online on the English version of the server since the early morning hours (ET) of March 7th. The server alone has nearly 860,000 members at the time of writing. It's unclear what proportion of his moderator team is XD employees or contractors, as opposed to volunteer moderators, so it's difficult to determine if any effort to remove player queries about Kapil's animation is coming directly from the studio.
Concerns about inclusivity of this kind are something that may be especially important for a cozy living sim marketed as a place of creativity, freedom, and social play. This particular controversy comes just a few weeks after several Heartopia players criticized the game's gacha mechanics and the use of AI-generated images in the puzzles. Despite the vocal backlash online, the attack animation doesn't appear to have significantly affected the number of players in the game. on Steam, Heartopia it continues to peak at around 45,000 concurrent players each day. That's below the highs it hit in February, but roughly in line with its opening month performance in January 2026.
