Helldivers 2 is on the eve of its second anniversary, and as the four-player team-based shooter continues to evolve, Arrowhead Game Studios' chief creative officer, Johan Pilestedt, has revealed that “megamaps” could be in the game's future. During a question and answer session with the official Helldivers 2 Discord, Pilestedt offered some insight into the direction the developers hope to take, and larger maps are potentially on the table. In addition, Pilestedt also mentioned that units can also become larger and with larger units and expanded maps, Helldivers 2 could be preparing for the biggest shake-up yet.
Of course, as exciting as Pilestedt's words are, these two changes are purely hypothetical at this point. When Pilestedt was asked about a Helldivers 2 continuation. Instead of making a third game, the CCO mentioned that Arrowhead is more interested in improving Helldivers 2 over time instead of focusing energy on a brand new game. Helldivers 2 has amassed an impressive following, and it just makes more sense to keep tweaking an already successful game than trying to build a new one. The possibility of larger maps and squads is an update that I am looking forward to in the future Helldivers 2 content again, but if these changes ever go through, Arrowhead will have to address the elephant in the room: vehicles.
Arrowhead's approach to vehicles will make or break Helldivers 2's potential megamaps
While game map sizes vary, some are already quite large, making the idea of a megamap exciting. Having a lot more ground to cover would be easier with a bigger squad in tow, but it could also be the perfect recipe for even more chaos. A double squad means double the chance of getting caught by friendly fire, and if more powerful vehicles are added to the mix, it can make the battlefield that much more hectic. Vehicles have been added to Helldivers 2 since its launch, but now they are definitely not a vital part of the overall game. At most, Helldivers 2 vehicles are new and I and many other players today were hoping that vehicles would become a more important part of the experience. It is true that not every player is interested in a game with a vehicle, but Helldivers 2 they must at least present opportunities for vehicle lovers during matches that fully embrace that particular playstyle.
Megamaps could open the door for even stronger matchups, but if Arrowhead continues with the same approach to vehicles as it is now, it could turn out to be a big mistake. There's so much potential for more dynamic vehicle play in this game, and Pilestedt's words hopefully indicate that they're destined to become more integral to the experience. Arrowhead design director Niklas Malmborg recently confirmed that the developers hope to make changes to the game's vehicles, which is a promising sign. However, it is not clear when or if at all Helldivers 2 updates will arrive and if they are being considered with megamaps in mind.
How can Arrowhead improve Helldivers 2 vehicles?
-
Customization
-
Improved physics
-
Replenish vehicle and mechanical ammunition
-
Shorter cool down times between uses
-
Brand new vehicles
-
Adding vehicles from the first Helldivers
In their current form, the vehicles are in Helldivers 2 they are primarily disposable support tools instead of central mechanics. The addition of Exosuits and the M-102 FRV was a great improvement to the game at the time, but how Helldivers 2 is still evolving, vehicle options are becoming much more limited in scope.
Larger maps would eventually give Arrowhead no choice but to make vehicles a core part of the gameplay loop, at least on these particular maps. Pilestedt's proposed megamaps mean that getting to certain areas on foot would be incredibly difficult, so better functioning vehicles to transport players from point A to point B would become essential. It's quite possible that Arrowhead is working on such concepts as of late Helldivers 2 leaks have shown that more vehicles could arrive with the long-awaited addition of Cyberstan.
Helldivers 2 leaks from dataminers have revealed evidence of an APC (Armored Personnel Carrier) and a tank that bears an uncanny resemblance to the Bastion tank from the original game. While Arrowhead has yet to officially confirm that these vehicles are on the way, the data has led many players to believe that they are slated for the next big update.
Megamaps and larger units could be one of the biggest Gamechangers Helldivers 2 has ever seen
From the game's launch in early 2024 Helldivers 2 managed to keep many of its players on their toes. From shedding the shadows of Illuminate to bringing the fight for a controlled democracy to Super Earth, Arrowhead has used the live service model in a way that truly benefits players and the overall experience, rather than using it as a means to simply make more money. To keep players invested, Arrowhead needs to continue to expand in various ways and megamaps and larger squads would take the phrase “go big or go home” literally.
However, bigger does not always mean better and with history Helldivers 2The performance issues raise questions about whether the game can even support such ambitions. Something like megamaps has the potential to be a monumental change for a third-person shooter, but whether this drastic change has a good or bad outcome can only depend on solid vehicle options and gameplay.
Helldivers 2Future plans remain hidden in the shadows at the moment, and if Arrowhead has taught players anything over the past two years, it's that it will remain so until the developer is ready to surprise. Ultimately, Arrowhead and the fans want the same thing: a great game. Helldivers 2The evolving nature means that each update will come with its own ups and downs, and while performance issues have largely improved, there's still room for improvement. Only time will tell what Arrowhead has in store with its megamap vision, but if this idea comes to fruition, hopefully that also means better vehicles will follow close behind.
