Highguard is shutting down permanently this month

High Guardianthe ambitious but highly controversial free-to-play hero shooter from Wildlight Entertainment is officially shutting down its servers and shutting down for good on March 12, 2026. In a heartfelt announcement shared on the official High Guardian X account, Wildlight thanked the community for its support since launch, revealed plans for one final update, and urged players to come back and enjoy the game before its link closes.

The shutdown marks an extraordinarily swift end to the live-streaming title, which debuted less than two months ago and initially won over millions of players despite facing a lot of backlash on seemingly all sides. Even after attracting more than 2 million players during its lifetime, some of whom believed it could become something great, Wildlight said it was “unable to build a sustainable player base” for support. High Guardian long-term, which led to the understandably difficult decision to terminate the project.

Highguard had a promising debut but faded quickly

High Guardian was first revealed at the end of 2025 as The Game Awards' 'last thing', a highly coveted showcase slot usually reserved for big new games, beloved franchises and titles from seasoned and well-known developers. Developed by Wildlight, a studio founded by veterans of Apex Legends, Titanfalland Call of Dutyoriginally entered the increasingly crowded live-service hero shooter space with a strong foundation.

High GuardianLaunching in January 2026 and the days leading up to it brought the heroic shooter plenty of attention, and its early player numbers – including a peak of nearly 100,000 concurrent users on Steam – seemed to suggest that it could indeed overcome early skepticism, even in what is normally a somewhat unrelenting genre. This momentum was short-lived, however, as interest in the game declined immensely in the following weeks.

Community response and the struggle to maintain interest

After starting it, High Guardian it faced mixed reception from both its players and critics. While some praised it for its fast movement, mounted combat, and unique Raid mode, others criticized it for its pace, performance, and even presentation. Steam charts and other data have seen a sharp drop in active players in just one month High Guardian's release that offers the first indication of its difficulty in maintaining an engaged community.

If that wasn't enough, Wildlight went through some major internal changes back in February when reports surfaced that “most” of the development team had been let go, leaving only the core crew supporting the game since then. Wildlight confirmed the layoffs at the time, but also said that the core group of developers remained supportive High Guardianongoing development.

Highguard's Final Update and The Last Days of Play

Despite the shutdown announcement, Wildlight said it plans to release one final content update by March 12. This patch is supposed to introduce a new Warden character. High Guardiana new weapon, account level progression, and skill trees – all features that were widely anticipated by the community and likely could have served as hooks to keep viewers in the game longer.

High Guardian's servers will remain live until March 12, 2026, giving players about a week to log in, experience the latest update, and share some final matches with their friends and random opponents. For the many dedicated players and content creators who have invested time into this High Guardian in his short life, these final days may offer something of a bittersweet farewell. Now like High Guardian prepares for darkness, its story is a reminder that initial buzz and major reveals don't automatically lead to long-term success, especially in an increasingly saturated market where player attention is rare, criticism is natural, and expectations are high.
