Because of this way of storytelling, there are many characters that he introduced into the story that later turned out to be much more important than they first appeared. While fans don't know much about him, Monkey D. Dragon will almost certainly fit the bill.
As the leader of the revolutionary army, Dragon is already one of the most important characters in all One piecebecause it represents a huge organization that acts as the polar opposite of world government. However, there are a few other potential revelations about him that, if true, could give him an even more important role in the story, so let's see what it might be!

The Man Marked by Flames is one of the greatest and most important mysteries One piece this remains unresolved. This mysterious character is someone who owns, or at least knows, the location of the final Road Poneglyph, and there are currently no more famous characters to fit this character than Monkey D. Dragon himself!
While nothing has been said about it, it's pretty clear that the Man Marked by Flames has to be an incredibly important figure in the world, something that Dragon definitely is, being the leader of one of the World Government's biggest enemies. Many people think that the identity of this mysterious individual is actually Scopper Gaban from Roger Pirates, as he knew the location of this Poneglyph on Fishman Island and is otherwise quite an important character.
However, because of all the other known information about Man Marked by Flames, Dragon fits more. First, Dragon's reach is wide as he has agents and supporters all over the known world, so his knowledge of the Poneglyphs on Fishman Island is very likely. Additionally, the Flame Marked Man is said to sail a black ship with black sails and is surrounded by eddies that sink anyone who gets too close.
This is consistent with Dragon's own ship and possibly his abilities, which were teased in Loguetown as allowing him to control the wind. Additionally, his name, Dragon, obviously refers to fire, so the connection to be made here is with the flames themselves, as well as the mark he has on his left eye, suggesting that he was “marked” at some point as well!

When the Straw Hats visited Loguetown, Dragon first appeared to stop Smoker from capturing Luffy. His presence also came with powerful storms that ultimately saved Luffy from his execution and provided him with a means to escape the marines' clutches. Since then, fans have always been interested in Dragon's abilities.
Pirate huh? It's not a bad idea.
In the Skypeia arc, a brief flashback revealed that the Shandorans believed in different gods; God of the Sun, God of Rain, God of the Forest and God of the Earth. Later, in Wano, it was confirmed that at least the Sun God actually exists due to the power granted to Luffy by his mythical Zoan Devil Fruit, Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika. Since this revelation, fans believe that the Dragon also ate the Rain God Fruit, which allows him to control the weather! Judging by fans' brief glimpse of his supposed abilities, it might be.
The Son Of Rocks D. Xebec
A dragon can have a special lineage
Easily the most far-fetched theory of all, there is a slim chance that Dragon is actually the son of the legendary Rocks D. Xebca! The reason some fans believe this is because Dragon looks nothing like his son Luffy or his father Garp, who both actually look quite similar and even have very similar scars around his left eye. The dragon, on the other hand, has tattoos.
The reason some believe he is Rocks' son is because they look very similar, at least in the few silhouettes of Rocks that have been shown so far, with their sharp faces and long dark hair. Additionally, Garp never directly confirmed that Dragon was his son, only that he was Luffy's father, which opens up the possibility that their relationship is through Luffy's mother. Garp only stated that Luffy was his child's child, never specifying if it was a Dragon or not.

It's also not entirely out of the question that Garp would raise Rocks' son as his own. It's because he already did it with Ace after Roger died, when Roger even told Garp over his prison cell that he knew Garp would do it. Maybe Roger said that because his Marine Corps rival did! This proved that even though Garp was their enemy, he was still willing to raise a son whose father was an enemy of the Marines and the World Government!
