This post contains spoilers for One Piece.
Holy. Figarland Garling is the Supreme Commander of the Holy Knights and one of the Five Elders in One piece. Garling was promoted after Saturn was killed by Imu in the Egghead arc. Back then, the promotion seemed well-deserved as Garling was the champion of God Valley.
The epithet indicated that Garling was the greatest winner of the God Valley incident, one of the most important events in One Piece history. Naturally, One piece fans wondered how Garling had won the title. Fortunately, Oda revealed every detail about the God Valley incident in Loki's flashback.
15 years later, Eiichiro Oda prepares the greatest revenge story in one piece
Oda set up One Piece's biggest revenge story and it's all related to Blackbeard in One Piece.
Figarland Garling was not the true champion of God's Vale
He barely did anything during the God Valley incident

Garling was defeated by Xebec in God Valley

Garling probably got the title because he was popular
In a flashback, it is revealed that Garling fatally wounded Shanks and Shamrock's mother. In addition to attacking the mother of his children, Garling also preyed on the innocent people of God Valley. He murdered them in cold blood because he wanted to win the competition and get Shakky as a prize.
Garling's only serious fight at God Valley came against Davy D. Xebec. Before the fight, readers expected Garling to put up a good fight against the pirate. But it ended rather quickly when Xebec blasted Garling with a wringer. Garling's humiliating loss meant he failed at the first hurdle, which was extremely shocking.
After being beaten, Garling did not fight anyone else. Instead, he reappeared after Xebec had already been defeated by Roger and Garp. He went with Maffey and Sommers to check on Xebce and dealt the final blow to the pirate. With Xebec's death, the God Valley incident ended. The World Government was humiliated by the pirates and therefore decided to cover up the truth.
Almost all evidence of God Valley's existence was erased and the truth was fabricated. Garp gets full credit for stopping the transformed Xebca. Meanwhile, Garling has earned the title of Champion of God Valley, though he has barely contributed anything of value.
Garling will be among the last of the One Piece villains
That being said, Garling was promoted by Imu to the position of Gorosei, which means they trust him. So Garling will definitely have an important role in the Final Saga of One Piece. There is currently no indication that he will be involved in the Elbaf arc, so either he will be involved in the next arc or Oda can save him for the end. It's possible that Garling will be forced to fight Blackbeard at some point since he was the one who dealt Xebec the final blow.
Blackbeard's relationship with his father remains unclear, but it seems that he plans to take revenge on all those who wronged him. For example, he went after Ochok, who betrayed the Rocks Pirates and delivered Shakky into the hands of the World Government. Blackbeard expelled Ochoku and took control of Hachinosa, a place Xebec frequented. The incident suggests that Blackbeard knows everything related to his father, or at least the important stuff. Fans shouldn't be surprised by Blackbeard's knowledge of history, as Oda revealed that the Yonko likes to research. Since Blackbeard is going through historical records, he must also know about his father's past.
Blackbeard is probably aware of Xebco's desire to rule the world. When Saturn asked Van Augur about the crew's plan, he replied that they wanted the world. At the time, it seemed that Blackbeard only wanted to become king of the world, but an important detail from Loki's flashback changed things. In a flashback, Xebec called Ima the world alone. Connecting the dots makes it clear that Blackbeard wants to depose Ima and take over. However, Blackbeard does not make any decisions in the moment. He is a calm and calculated man who makes decisions only after weighing the pros and cons. Hopefully, Oda will reveal Blackbeard's goals soon.
