How to get a silo and what they are used for

Silos are a necessary building on each Stardew Valley manage. These tall 3×3 structures are used to store hay, a vital material for any farmer who chooses to raise animals. Without silos, players may struggle to keep their cows and chickens fed and happy, especially during the winter season.

Some players may not realize the importance of this building until they start raising animals, leading to scrambles to build it quickly. To help new farmers, here is a quick guide on how to build silos and use them on the farm.

One of them concerns how grass grows on the farm during the winter, which affects how players feed their animals and store hay in silos. For those researching 1.6, here's what farmers need to know.

How to get a silo

A silo is a good choice as the first building to buy. It is cheaper and requires fewer materials than most other buildings; in addition, it allows players to build feed stocks, which will help keep their animals happy and produce quality goods. In order to build a silo on their farm, players will need to collect the following materials:

• 100 stones: This is one of the easiest materials to collect. Simply break rocks with a pickaxe on the farm or in the mines.
• 10 clays: Dig into the dirt with a hoe. Players usually find plenty of dirt when preparing the ground to plant seeds. Additionally, look for artifact locations (small worms sticking out of the dirt). These can also bring Clay.
• 5 copper rod: Break copper ore nodules with a pickaxe in the mines. These are common at higher levels, so players should be able to pick up supplies quickly even in the early game. Place five copper ores and one coal in the furnace to make one copper bar.

Take these materials to Robin at the carpentry shop to purchase a silo 100 g, which will take two days to complete. In general, the best locations for silos are on the far edges or corners of the farm where players won't get in the way. However, depending on the player's choice of layout, they may choose to decoratively incorporate them into their farm design.

How to use a silo

Once a silo is built, players can use it for storage hay. Hay can be obtained in several ways:

• The player can cut grass on their farm with a scythe that has a 50% chance to let them collect hay. Players hay cannot be harvested this way without a silo.
• Cutting Wheat has a 40% chance they thresh hay. This hay will be collected in the player's inventory rather than the silo.
• Marnie sells hay on his ranch 50g each.
• The desert merchant will sell the player 3 hay in exchange for 1 omnidirectional geode.
• Marnie can send players 30 hay by mail.

Any hay that the player collects with the scythe will be stored directly in the silo. Additionally, if players purchase or receive hay as a gift, they can right-click on the silo while holding the hay to add it to the stash. It can accommodate any silo 240 hay.

To access the dream from the silo, simply click on Hay stack in a barn or coop. Players can then place this hay in the feed trough for their animals. Alternatively, if players have grass to cut and need to make room in the silo, they can remove all the hay from the silo using the stack and store it in the chest.

Note that if a player purchases a Deluxe Barn or Deluxe Coop, these will come with automatic feeding system. The player will no longer need to manually fill the chute every day; instead, it will be filled in automatically. This also means that players can no longer manually take hay from silos and store it elsewhere. If a player has automatic feeders and several animals on a farm, it is often useful to have more forces so that they don't run out of hay every few days.

Planning ahead

As mentioned above, the Silo is a great choice for a first build on a new farm. Many new players eager to start raising animals may be tempted to buy a Barn or Coop first; however, it is a mistake to do this without a farm silo. The lack of silos makes it very difficult to feed animals unless the player has a lot of grass outside.

Speaking of grass, players will likely be cutting a lot of grass in the early game as they clear overgrown land for planting and construction. If a player does not have a silo on their farm, it is a waste of hay resources. With this in mind, players should aim to build a silo – or even two – as one of their first priorities.

Storing hay in silos (silos) is especially important when preparation for winter. This season, the animals will not graze outside, preferring the cozy warmth of a stable or shed. This is why hay storage in a silo is essential. Any grass left standing at the end of autumn will remain on the player's farm throughout the winter; but he falls asleep.
