I think I figured out what Overwatch 2 is doing with the story

Overwatch 2 story speculation and potential plot spoilers ahead.

Overwatch 2 recently revealed Vendetta, a gladiator with a sword and chips on both shoulders. While the new hero makes history as the first dedicated melee DPS hero, what makes her even more groundbreaking are her ties to tradition. As the daughter of Antonio Giordani, the former Talon manager killed by Blackwatch, Vendetta has the score to match both sides of the Overwatch-Talon conflict. It sure looks like it Overwatch 2 sets up Vendetta as the next main antagonist of Future Earth.

But it can go deeper. From context clues, anecdotes, and leaks, the evidence suggests Overwatch 2The first melee damage hero could be in the midst of a massive lore shakeup. Although most of this is speculation, I think Vendetta will rise as a third faction in the conflict between Talon and Overwatch, recruiting some newer heroes to their side in the process. Although I could be wrong, there might be a grand Overwatch 2 a conspiracy years in the making is unfolding before our eyes.

While gamers may be debating insults for best performance or game of the year, I can't help but be most disappointed with Overwatch 2's omission.

How Overwatch 2's New Hero Can Change the Game

Vendetta's movie trailer revealed that she is the daughter of Antonio Giordani, a former smuggler, arms dealer, and dealer for Talon. I say “former” because Gabriel Reyes killed him in the Retribution Overwatch Archives PvE mission from the original game, much to the chagrin of fellow Blackwatch member Cole Cassidy. Together with Genji and Moira, Cassidy and Reyes stole Vendetta's future and set her on a path of revenge.

As an adult, Vendetta became a gladiator at the Colosseo, known for destroying war machines with nothing but the Palatine Fang, her greatsword. However during Vendetta Overwatch 2 cinematic, he calls his entire act “a means to an end.” He plans to use his fame, notoriety and – most importantly – his followers to “take back everything that was stolen from us”.

It's clear that Vendetta is planning some big moves, and some recent rumors confirm that. According to the credible Overwatch 2 leaker, Vendetta raids Talon HQ, cuts off Doomfist's arm, and kicks him out of a window in the upcoming film. The hostile takeover ends with an increase in Talon activity, including their arrival at the hidden Overwatch base. While it could end up being false, the leaker accurately predicted the Ramattra and Zenyatta comic, plus Vendetta's name and her connection to Antonio before the reveal, lending some credence to the story.

The new hero has reasons to hate both Talon and Overwatch; her father's killer is now a Talon Reaper agent, and Moira is one of her leaders. Meanwhile, Cassidy and Genji joined Overwatch and Blackwatch was a branch of the original organization. Vendetta's vendettas make perfect sense, and a hostile takeover of Talon would give her the resources to even the score with both sides.

If these leaks are true, Doomfist may no longer be part of Talon, and it's safe to assume that Vendetta would want to destroy the Reaper for obvious reasons. Moira would probably get in trouble too, given her complicity in Antonio's death, but I could see Sigma and Maximilian, who are supposedly going to be present during the cinematic whisper, siding with Vendetta for survival and profit. Sombra and Mauga aren't directly loyal to Doomfist, so it wouldn't be surprising if they joined Vendetta's new Talon, while Widowmaker is a bit of a wild card.

However, it wouldn't be too fanciful to imagine Vendetta recruiting a handful of other newer heroes behind Mauga. They are Illari, Hazard and Freja Overwatch 2 heroes who seem like perfect recruits for Vendetta's new Talon, due to their common themes of apathy and resentment towards both Overwatch and Talon:

Aimless and lonely after the deaths of the other Inti warriors, Illari has had sympathetic interactions with Talon-aligned characters such as Doomfist, Sombra, and Widowmaker.
Hazard was crippled in the crossfire between Talon and Overwatch and stole the powerful vanadium isotope from Moira.
Freja, a former Overwatch search and rescue worker, was bitter when the world turned its back on the organization and accepted rewards from Executive Director Talon Maximilien.

Of the other new heroes added Overwatch 2Sojourn, Juno, and Wuyang join Overwatch, Ramattra leads Null Sector, and Junker Queen rules Junkertown. Kiriko, Lifeweaver, and Venture are affiliated with independent groups, but their heroic ideals make them unlikely to join Vendetta.

Illari felt particularly disconnected from tradition Overwatch 2who only appeared once in the “Futures Past” storyline with Soldier: 76, so falling to the dark side would allow the character to really join the story in a tragic way that leaves room for future redemption.

This plot could technically go even deeper. In the short story “Lucky Man”, it was revealed that a mysterious organization represented by an eye with three dots above and below was responsible for the destruction of Overwatch HQ – a secret faction that Sombra had been trying to learn more about for years. It remains to be seen how this secret group would benefit from the chaos that Vendetta would cause, but since they seem to be profiting from the conflict and failures of Overwatch and Talon, it wouldn't be hard to see them getting involved.

Overwatch 2 is gearing up for a new story

Aside from speculation and leaks, there is evidence in the game itself that something like this could happen. The Overwatch 2 The mid-Season 19 update added a Story feature to the game, which records the main cinematics and comics for players to easily read. Most of the lore from this year — including the cinematic where Freja meets Maximilien — is available right now, with an empty spot for a new video labeled “Coming Soon” — right in the perfect spot for a leaked Talon Vendetta enemy takeover movie.

Ramattra and Null Sector have officially retired, making way for a new main antagonist to take center stage.

If any of this happens, the classic battle between Overwatch and Talon could get a new player in the form of the Vendetta faction. In theory, the expelled Talon members—including Doomfist, who might have miraculously survived his encounter—might even have to team up with Overwatch to bring Vendetta down. This could be an absolutely huge setup Overwatch 2's lore… or I could be completely off base. Regardless, something big is coming Overwatch 2 soon, and it looks like Vendetta will be the catalyst.
