Sucker Punch creative director Jason Connell talks about the difficult decision to cut back on one major story element Ghost of Yoteibut in the end it was the right challenge. It was a strong launch window Ghost of Yoteia game that saw praise from critics, positive word of mouth from players, and strong sales to back it all up.
After launch in early October 2025 Ghost of Yotei debuted to very strong sales after initially dominating the PlayStation pre-order charts. The game was able to make back its development budget twice over, although Yotei initially lagged slightly behind its predecessor, Ghost of Tsushima. With more planned content, there will be new details regarding the development process Ghost of Yotei began to emerge, including a difficult decision that had to be made early.
Magic: The Gathering adds a card based on Ghost of Yotei's Atsu
Atsu from Ghost of Yotei is being added to Magic: The Gathering as part of a special PlayStation-themed secret lair coming soon.
Ghost of Yotei scaled back the ambitious narrative plans
In a dual interview with Vince Gilligan, creator of popular shows like Breaking Bad, Better call Sauland PluribusJason Connell of Sucker Punch talked about some of the initial plans Ghost of Yotei. At first, Connell wanted to push the meditative mechanics of storytelling Ghost of Yoteiwhich allowed players to experience a moment in time from Atsu's past. According to Connell, the original idea was to use it throughout, with players experiencing a dark “lone wolf” quest and then immediately switching back to the past to not only feel a little more warmth, but also better understand the cause Atsu is fighting for.
While originally designed as a kind of stake-in-the-ground feature, the mechanic was cut after about a year when the studio realized the amount of art required would double. After difficult decisions with feedback and studio colleagues, Connell made the call to narrow it down and only use it in certain locations, such as Atsu's childhood home in Ghost of Yotei. While Connell admits that “it saddened me that day that I had to kill it and narrow it down,” he also believes it was the right choice overall.
So even though it's this awesome feature, it saddened me the day I had to kill it and narrow it down. But in the end it was the right choice.
Gilligan compares the decision to fast food, specifically the amount of salt on fries, where getting the balance right can be tricky and too much ruins the final product. In retrospect, Connell speculates that if they had stuck with the original plan the way he wanted, it could potentially have been seen as more of a gimmick, especially if Sucker Punch wasn't able to back up the content to make it worthwhile.
So while some things may not have gone as planned as Jason Connell originally envisioned, it seems that the final version of the game came out stronger for a change. Another feature that is seeing some development is the fan-favorite Legends multiplayer mode Ghost of Yotei in the year 2026. While Sucker Punch hasn't provided all the details yet, the free DLC will have two-player co-op missions and four-player survival matches centered around the giant demonic versions of the Yotei Six.
