Nintendo is one of the most famous game companies in the world. With franchises like The Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong, Metroidand Animal CrossingNintendo is a name that many gamers have grown up with over the years. From kids to adults, Nintendo exclusives continue to be among the most entertaining video games. Like many others, I was introduced to gaming through Nintendo. One of the first games I ever played was Super Mario 64thanks to my older cousin. The game came out in 1996, but I didn't play it until the early 2000s, when I was actually old enough to really get my head around the controller. Once I was able to play games with my cousins, they introduced me to a whole new world that I had been missing.
Super Mario 64 It wasn't the only Mario-centric game released in 1996 that I liked. Still one of my favorites Super Mario games are Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. Developed by Square Enix, Super Mario RPG is still one of the most unique games in the franchise and one of the best the SNES has to offer. I was instantly hooked as a kid and ever since then I've wondered if Nintendo would actually finally take the leap and green light the sequel I've been wanting so much.
Nintendo and Square Enix's Super Mario RPG is a JRPG unlike any other
Super Mario RPG Nintendo and Square Enix seemed like a match made in heaven, but the relationship between the companies went cold for a while. Once the PlayStation began to take off in earnest, and the arrival of the PS2 in 2000 pushed gaming into the 21st century, Square Enix was able to go bigger and bolder with its projects. The heart of the kingdom would quickly find its home on the PS2 and become a hit, and Square Enix's evolving visuals and gameplay simply made a lot of its projects unsuitable for Nintendo consoles. However, after years of development and embracing new trends in the industry, the relationship between the two gaming icons seems to have warmed. Games like Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth coming to Switch 2 is now a reality as Switch 2 is the most powerful console Nintendo has made to date. Hopefully, this again opens the door to future collaboration between the companies.
Super Mario RPG and Super Mario 64 they were released only a few months apart. Super Mario RPG was released in May 1996 Super Mario 64 launched in September 1996.
Nintendo and Square Enix weren't necessarily hostile to each other; the two have had different goals over the years. However, with Square Enix apparently more interested in porting their games to the Switch 2, this might make me get my hopes up a little too much for the possibility Super Mario RPG continuation.
Yeah, he was there Super Mario RPG remade for Switch and it was great. But it wasn't as satisfying as the sequel would have been. If anything, see Super Mario RPG the Switch's modern graphics left me wanting a sequel that much more. It was like having a solid appetizer for an amazing main course that I knew would never arrive.
Is a sequel to Super Mario RPG developed by Square Enix impossible?
Nothing is impossible, really. However, after 30 years, it would definitely be a miracle if Square Enix jumped on the bandwagon. Between Final Fantasy and mysterious condition Kingdom Hearts 4Square Enix has their hands full at the moment. Of course, Square Enix isn't necessarily the developer in charge of the sequel, but I'd really prefer it to be. Having Square Enix at the helm is what it did Super Mario RPG its special spark in the first place, and it would be hard for another studio to duplicate it.
The game's balanced combat system, fun story, visuals, music and an overall innovative approach to the game Super Mario games were based on the unique vision of Square Enix. AND Super Mario RPG a sequel would be huge for longtime fans and the younger generation who only know the remake. However, putting the project in the wrong hands could also miss all the magic. Super Mario RPG has a lot to celebrate, but one of my favorites is the original characters. There are some great personalities in this game who deserve to play bigger roles Super Mario canyon.

Super Mario RPG has some of the best characters in Super Mario games just for their goofiness and charm. Between names like Crate Guy and Knife Guy and playable stars like Mallow and Geno, the cast still boasts some of the series' most creative characters three decades later. Characters like Boshi and Johnny Jones are still in demand as additions to future Nintendo games, but that has yet to happen.
A sequel to the Super Mario RPG may never become a reality, but the OG remains one of Nintendo's most magical games
The release of the Switch 2 last year offered plenty of excitement. Until then, Nintendo hadn't released a new console since its predecessor in 2017, so 2025 marked a new era for the company. With the launch of the Switch 2 came something new Mario Kart game and even a new title starring Donkey Kong Donkey Kong Banana. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond closed out the year and it will be fun to see what 2026 has in store. Maybe I'm getting my hopes up too high by hoping Super Mario RPG a sequel will appear sometime during the life of the Switch 2, but who knows? It might be wishful thinking, but after Square Enix finally quits Kingdom Hearts 4I'll still be crossing my fingers that the studio teams up with Nintendo for another whimsy-filled RPG featuring one of the most iconic video game characters of all time. Even if that day never comes, I still have the original SNES version and the Switch remake to take a trip down memory lane with.
