The Rinnegan belongs to the three great dojutsu from the world of Naruto. Fans were introduced to two of the Dojutsu at the very beginning of the Naruto series, the Byakugan and the Sharingan. The Byakugan of the Hyuga clan clearly came from Kaguya Otsutsuki and was then passed down to Hamuro, who then passed it down to the Hyuga, his direct descendants.

However, now the Rinnegan doesn't even exist among shinobi anymore, and even if it did, it was a very cheap imitation of what it was supposed to be like. Needless to say, the Boruto series ruined the Rinnegan forever and it will probably never be the same again. Fans can only hope that Kishimoto somehow redeems this eye later, but the chances of that happening are very low.
