Kakarot Daima DLC means that Goku didn't know about SSJ4

The recently released Daima DLC from Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot restarted the debate about whether Goku knew about Super Saiyan 4 and was hiding the whole transformation.

When Dragon Ball Daima finally revealed its trump card in the form of a (literally) new Super Saiyan 4 version for Goku, it was without a doubt the highlight of the show. That being said, it raised some major questions about the Dragon Ball lore, especially with everything that happens after Daima.

Not only does Goku have a stronger form up his sleeve than SSJ3, his future battles look like he's holding back, but a conversation with Vegeta at the end of the show made some fans wonder if he knew about or with Super Saiyan 4, or if Neva activated it for him. Surprise, surprise, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot has now reignited that debate.

The dangers of worrying too much about Canon's DBS

Earlier this week, we reported that Daima Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot's second DLC includes an extended epilogue that mostly serves as a distinctly non-canonical way to allow players to control Goku Mini and the gang even after the credits roll. Well, that scene also includes a moment where Goku talks about his form and says “I got to Super Saiyan 4 and everything…”.

Kakarot's Daimo expansion is one of his most unique and interesting, but is let down by how short it is.

JordanLDurham pointed out on Twitter that this line of dialogue supports the theory that Goku had no idea that Super Saiyan 4 existed and that Neva's magic was what activated it in him, rather than him knowing about it and simply hiding it. The argument is that Goku saying he “did it” means he's as surprised as we are that the form even exists.

Of course, one has to consider the fact that this scene is from CC2 and isn't actually canon, just like the Mini Bugs it introduces.

While it seems pretty cut and dry to me (especially as someone who thinks Neva basically rushed the process), some Dragon Ball fans disagree with the conclusion. The tweet got a lot of attention and support, but many comments think that the line actually supports the opposite theory, and that Goku knew about SSJ4 and just needed time and a challenge to achieve it.

Others argue the middle ground that Goku's dialogue in both Kakarot and the anime suggests that he knew of another level all along and simply didn't know how to reach it, which I think is fair enough. The sad fact is that we'll just never know for sure since Toriyama is no longer with us, but it's interesting to see that the debate is still raging so long after Daimo's conclusion.
