Larian Studios Delivers Small Divinity Spoiler: “The Alligator”

Nearly a month after agreeing to hold an AMA to help give fans “better insight” into Divinity and its development process “more directly,” Larian Studios made good on its word with an extensive hour-long question-and-answer session on Reddit that provided a range of insights on everything from whether Baldur's Gate 3 will end up on Switch 2 to Larian's much-maligned use of Generative AI.

But if there's one tidbit that stands out among all the tidbits, it's that writing director Adam Smith gave fans a one-word spoiler for Divinity, another massive project from Larian that was revealed during last year's edition of The Game Awards.

When a redditor asked, “Can you give us a little spoiler that will sound completely pointless until we play the game?” Smith responded with something that will surely eat away at fans' minds until Divinity arrives.

“Alligator,” Smith wrote succinctly.

That's all. That's the word of the day — Alligator.

Divinity Interview with Swen Vincke

Larian Studios' Swen Vincke on Divinity in the footsteps of Baldur's Gate 3 in Early Access

Following the worldwide success of Baldur's Gate 3, we sit down with Larian Studios founder Swen Vincke to talk all things divine.

Now, there are a number of ways this could go, and some fans have already started putting their minds to the test to try and figure out what it all means.

The Numbers Mason, what do they mean?

Okay, let's get this out of the way first – one fan thinks the “Alligator” Smith is referring to is taking the place of the “Bear” who made waves with Baldur's Gate 3. You know, the bear you can screw up.

It's not for nothing that the highly publicized “bear scene” was almost certainly hugely important in putting Baldur's Gate 3 on the map, at least on the mainstream map. Who's to say an “alligator scene” won't do the same?

Jokes aside, “Alligator,” as PC Gamer noted in its write-up, could be referring to something we haven't seen in any of these titles yet: the ability to swim.

This was heavily hinted at by head of design Nick Pechenin, who noted that Divinity will allow you to do something that was mostly missing from past games.

“There was something that bothered me when I was exploring the default areas of DOS1, DOS2 and BG3,” the boss wrote. “It's staring you in the face when you think about it. In Divinity, I can finally do what I've wanted to do in every previous game.”

So while you'll probably be able to swim better than an alligator ever could, what if “The Alligator” is an enemy creature that can absolutely change the game and everyone will recognize it? These are just guesses, but we might be on to something.
