When analysts suggested that the new The Witcher 3 expansion could appear in 2026, fans of the franchise were taken aback by the same mix of excitement and doubt spreading throughout the community. Now this The Witcher 3 expansion went from a possibility to seemingly unconfirmed thanks to earnings.
The original leak, as PCGamesN pointed out, came from Borys Niespielak, a trusted insider who covers the Polish video game industry. He argued that the Fool's Theory would develop a The Witcher 3 extension next to it Witcher 1 remake. While interesting, it wasn't enough to get fans' hopes up, which is why analyst Mateusz Chrzanowski's comments last month were such a big deal. Chrzanowski confirmed the idea that this The Witcher 3 DLC could indeed happen, even going so far as to suggest a $30 price tag and a May content release window. And now fans have the next best thing to the official announcement.
According to Eurogamer, not only did an email exchange with original leaker Boris Niespielak see him add that multiple sources had verified the existence of the expansion, but he also pointed to a rather telling call to CD Projekt Red's earnings. In CD Projekt Red's own words, “there is a chance that the new content hinted at in recent calls and reports will see release in the coming year.” While the studio is playful and doesn't say outright that they're talking about oa The Witcher 3 extension, that's almost certainly the content it's referring to. After this discovery, it's very hard to dispute the idea that the DLC is real, even if it wasn't revealed at The Game Awards 2025 as many expected.
When Eurogamer was asked to comment on the revenue estimate, CD Projekt Red responded with its usual response of not commenting on rumors or speculation.
The third expansion of The Witcher 3 feels real and expectations will be daunting
While an expansion for a ten-year-old game may seem strange on paper, it's not unheard of in the gaming industry. One prominent example of this approach working was seen at Border franchise years ago. Despite Borderlands 2 Gearbox was seven years old at the time of its release (and hadn't received new content for several years prior to this drop), making Commander Lilith and Fight For Sanctuary. This expansion tied up several loose plot threads and set the stage for Borderlands 3with Gearbox even releasing him for a period of time to get his product seen as much as possible.
Basically, even though it was said The Witcher 3 The expansion would be paid, it's also a clever form of advertising that encourages players to what's next. WITH The Witcher 3 have long legs and continue to sell copies long after their debut, the potential audience for this expansion is huge. Granted, there are some big questions that will need to be answered, but DLC for what is considered by many to be one of the best video games of all time is going to be a big deal no matter when it comes out. The questions listed include:
-
Will Fool's Theory manage to create an expansion on par with CD Projekt Red's popular Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine?
-
With CD Projekt Red fully transitioning to Unreal Engine 5, will going back to the Red engine for this bonus expansion cause any hiccups?
-
Will the expansion focus on Ciri? This seems likely given that he is the main character of the new one Charmer trilogy and Geralt's next story could risk damaging his brilliant send-off.
for now Charmer fans will have to wait for the expansion's official announcement to see how big this DLC will be. While it's not officially confirmed yet, there's plenty of smoke coming from the fire and it would be an unforgettable way to set the stage for Ciri's next adventure.
