Loki's family tree in one piece, explained

Many sagas in the story One piece focus on a character's family tree to explain their personal relationships or even their connection to significant historical events. Learning that Portgas D. Ace was the son of Pirate King Gol D. Roger, for example, was a big plot twist, and fans felt the same way when the truth about Rocks D. Xebco and Blackbeard came out. The Elbaph arc contains another, even larger family tree to explore: Prince Loki's family tree.

At first, Prince Loki was just a huge, intimidating giant chained up in the Underworld as a wild card. He was a rogue prince that only Luffy trusted and he hardly felt like a member of the royal family. But like One piece showed that monarchs and their relatives often play a central role in the most important events of the story, such as the Nefeltari family in Alabasta and the royal line of Riku on Dressros. Now it's time to explore the entire family tree that Loki calls his own and see how Loki is connected to the history of his giant island.

King Harald only wanted peace and harmony for the giants of Elbaf

Harald died at Loki's hand to protect Elbaph's honor

The late King Harald is probably the most consistent member of Loki's bloodline and is certainly one of the most important figures in the entire history of Elbaf. When King Harald was a young man, he was brash and violent, reinforcing the gory image that most ancient giants had as horned warriors. It was then that he met the mothers of his two sons, Estrid being Harald's official wife. Harald did not have a particularly loving bond with Estrid, the latter being self-indulgent, greedy and condescending as a noblewoman-turned-queen. This set the stage for an even more rocky relationship between Estrid and Loki.

5 Reasons to Read One Piece Manga Instead of Watching Anime

One Piece anime wasn't always as good as it is now. There have always been many reasons to read manga instead.

King Harald did not spend much time with his younger son Loki, which contributed to Loki's continued feelings of loneliness, even with Ida around. Yet Harald loved his younger son as much as he loved his firstborn, and it was all the more tragic when father and son clashed. As One pieceAn incredible flashback sequence showed King Harald lost as a well-intentioned king who became an immortal, twisted pawn of Imu. Harald wished to die, but no one could kill him except Loki, who had the weapon Ragnir to do so. In his final moments, Harald pleaded with Loki to take the king's throne and be Elbaph's savior. Unfortunately, the opposite happened when Loki was shamed for suicide and parricide.

Estrid rejected her son Loki when she saw his eyes

Although Estrid received the least screen time of any member of Prince Loki's bloodline, she still played a key – and cruel – role in Loki's development. Although King Harald was close to his first lover Ida, as a monarch he needed a proper queen, so he married Estrid. Unlike the simple and kind Ida, Estrid was the picture of noble beauty and elegance, which contradicted her cruelly selfish side. Estrid reveled in luxury and thought highly of herself, and this warped her view of her only child. It is clear that Estrid wanted an attractive child that could be a reflection of her grace, but instead she ended up with a “monster”. Estrid's unnamed brother, Loki's uncle, felt much the same way.

On the day of Loki's birth, Estrid showed her true colors and reacted with shock and horror. Her newborn son had devilish eyes and horns, prompting Estrid to throw Loki out of a window and throw him into Elbaph's underworld. Many times, tearful and confused, Loki tried to climb back out to be reunited with his mother, but Estrid repeatedly refused him until she died of an unknown illness. Estrid thus became the opposite of benevolent rulers such as King Riku, the Nefeltari Cobra and even her husband Harald. Loki never spoke to Estrid and never held her, but Estrid's actions set Loki on a painful path that made him a self-sufficient wanderer.

Hajrudin was Luffy's ally long before the Straw Hats met Loki

Hajrudin was the first member of Loki's bloodline to ever appear One piecelong before fans even heard Loki's own name. Loki wasn't even mentioned by name until the Whole Cake Saga, while Hajrudin made his Corrida Colosseum debut in the Dressrosa Saga. At first, Hajrudin was a competitor with Flame-Flame Fruit on the turn, but it didn't last. It wasn't long before Hajrudin became a member of the Grand Fleet of Straw Hats along with the likes of Bartolomeo Cavendish. This has been Hajrudin's main role ever since, and here's why One piece fans expect to see him fight Luffy's enemies later in the Final Saga. A pirate alliance like the Grand Fleet of Straw Hats could only be established if warriors like Hajrudin stepped onto the battlefield to make a difference as the climax approached.

One Piece: How Can Loki Make Luffy the Pirate King Explained

Loki could play an important role in Luffy's dream.

Hajrudin had a strained relationship with his younger half-brother Loki for years, with Loki mocking Hajrudin as a gentler and lesser giant than he was. Although younger, Loki was bigger and stronger than Hajrudin, and Loki even shamed Hajrudin for having a foreign mother, with Ida being born outside of Elbaph. Hajrudin even blamed Loki for King Harald's death, as most giants did, but the half-brothers had recently reconciled. Now Hajrudin knows the truth and the brothers are reluctant allies, with Luffy as a mutual friend to smooth things over a bit.

Ida is almost like Loki's aunt

Ida supported Loki more than Estrid ever would have

The giantess Ida is only distantly related to Loki and they do not share blood, yet Ida has a well-deserved place in Loki's life. Years ago, the younger Harald met Ida on the Grand Line Islands and they eventually fell in love before conceiving their son, Hajrudin. Ida moved to Elbaph, where she established herself as a caring and popular person. This made Ida a foil to the vain and self-centered Estrid, with Ida being comfortable with her ordinary appearance in her ordinary life. Ida did not resent Harald for conceiving another son with another woman and in fact Ida embraced Loki for who he was.

Although Loki often mocked Ida, Ida was like an aunt to Loki as a kind-hearted mother to Loki's older half-brother. One piece fans might even say that Ida was the only real stabilizing element in Loki's life and was the mother figure he needed, even if Loki wasn't grateful for it at first. Over time, Loki came to appreciate Ida's role in his life to the point of offering her freshly caught game to help her gain strength when Ida fell ill. when Ida died, Loki mourned, another tragedy in his shockingly painful and chaotic life.
