Mario Kart World misses the return of the fan-favorite game mode

This indicates a new leak Mario Kart World may soon welcome the return of one of the series' most popular modes. Launched on June 5, 2025 alongside the release of the Nintendo Switch 2, Mario Kart World is the latest in Nintendo's line of kart racing games and the first to feature an open world to explore.

Mario Kart WorldCritical reception was largely positive, with the game ranking at an 87 Top Critic Average score on OpenCritic. The game was praised for its dynamic odds, expanding on the formula popularized by the previous entry in the series, Mario Kart 8. The game's open world is also a refreshing take on the series' signature formula, allowing players to roam freely and discover secrets on the world map between races. The game's atypical structure also lends itself to Knockout Tour, an extremely popular new game mode that allows a large group of players to continuously race from one track to another, eliminating groups of racers after each completed lap until only one winner remains.

Bob-Omb Blast was first introduced as a component Mario Kart Double Dashbattle mode. In the unique GamCube Mario Kart title, racers playing in this mode were given nothing but Bob-Ombs and were tasked with blowing up enemy players and increasing their points with each individual blast hit. Getting hit would also lose the racers points, and the first to reach three points was the winner of the mode. Variations on this formula have been included in optional rulesets Mario Kart 7, Mario Kart 8, and Mario Kart TourBalloon Battle modes that allow players to set all items on Bob-Ombs. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe saw the formal return of the Bob-Omb Blast, although the game now offered players five balloons that would be expended each time they were hit by a Bob-Omb. Losing all five balloons would cause players to respawn with half their points gone and fewer balloons to work with.

While Mario Kart World has been regularly updated since its launch alongside the Nintendo Switch 2, the implementation of a new game mode would be one of the biggest changes the game has seen since its release. Will this new version of the game mode be more similar to the original as seen in Double Dash or Mario Kart 8 DeluxeThe release remains to be seen, but fans should pay attention to Nintendo's MAR10 Day announcements to potentially learn more about their plans for the game.
