Grand Theft Auto 6 being late again is a big bummer, but it's not the end of the world. No doubt it will eventually launch, but that doesn't mean it will GTA 6 lives up to the hype. This begs the question of whether it is best to play the game in a failed state or never experience it.
In the case of these games, the fans will never know because they were canceled before anyone could pass judgment beyond the executive level. Maybe they were train wrecks and would disappoint everyone, but maybe they could be something major that would change EVERYTHING.
Super Mario Bros. 35
Limited time celebration
Super Mario Bros. 35 was released to celebrate Mario's 35th anniversary in 2020. The game reused assets from the NES classic, Super Mario Bros., serving as the basis for a 2D Battle Royale game. It was a popular addition to the genre that was exclusive to the Switch, but as quickly as it arrived, Nintendo took it away. Specifically, it launched on October 1, 2020, and the service ended on April 1, 2021, and is no longer playable.

The last of us part 2 was announced in 2016, and in 2018, Naughty Dog revealed that they were working on a multiplayer mode for the game. The full game launched in 2020 with many updates announcing further delays, and then in 2022 it was revealed that the multiplayer section would become a separate product of the live service. It was canceled a year later and all that exists now is some artwork and a few leaked screenshots, but it would probably have similar gameplay to the main games.
Final Fantasy 7: The First Soldier
Prequel Battle Royale
Final Fantasy 7: The First Soldier was another Battle Royale game based on the popular universe, Final Fantasy VII. It was released in 2021 for mobile, and the prequel was Shinra testing soldiers to become members of the SOLDIER program, which fits the lore well enough.
Players could create their character and charge between rounds to create the dumbest candidate they could. Unfortunately, Final Fantasy 7: The First Soldier it was never ported to consoles and the service ended in 2023.
Perfect Darkness 3

Other Perfect darkness the game never had an official title, but it would be the third entry after 2005 Perfect Dark Zero. Announced at The Game Awards in 2020, fans were excited as Microsoft has released very slow trickles of information over the years. Just when it looked like it was ready to come out, it was canceled in July 2025, and developer The Initiative was destroyed along with it. Crystal Dynamics helped with development, but since Microsoft doesn't own them, they were safe from the fallout.

Maverick Hunter was a first-person shooter spinoff Mega Man X franchise, basically restarting the character. It was developed by Armature Studio, which was made up of former Retro Studios designers. If anyone could do the conversion, they could because Retro Studios did a highly acclaimed one Metroid Prime games. Maverick Hunter was never officially announced, but work seems to have started and stopped in 2010, with leaked footage appearing in 2013 that gave fans a final look at the mysterious game.

There are many of them Star Wars games that will never see the light of day, but Star Wars: Battlefront 3 is perhaps the most tragic. That's because the game was apparently 99% made by Free Radical Design, who are best known for their critically acclaimed TimeSplitters franchise.
It was never officially announced, but work took place between 2006 and 2008. The first round of footage was leaked in 2008, followed by another big one in 2012. The biggest leak was the build of the Wii game, which dropped in 2024. So while there is a game build for people to play, Star Wars: Battlefront 3 he is not in the condition that the fans want to see.

Fairytale legends was a spinoff of the series that was first released in June 2014. A closed beta was released the following October. The game was a 4v1 multiplayer dungeon crawler where four heroes faced off against one villain who could create traps and send monsters towards the heroes. AI-controlled characters could appear as heroes or villains, so it was never meant to be a limiting experience. Another beta dropped in 2016 that even allowed players to deposit money Fairytale legends. Also in 2016, the game was canceled, the money was refunded, and the developer, Lionhead Studios, was fired.
Legacy Of Kain: Dead Sun/Nosgoth
Two games, both canceled
Legacy of Kain: Dead Sun was developed by Climax Studios as another action adventure in this game Legacy of Cain series. It started around 2009 and was canceled in 2012, but Psyonix was working on a multiplayer game mode. Instead of canceling both, Square Enix had Psyonix release the game through several stages of closed and open alpha and beta as a new standalone product called Nosgoth. The first rounds of playable builds started appearing in 2013, but the game was finally released in 2016, despite gaining some fans on Steam.
