Metro Awakening author talks about cinematic potential

Awakening the subway is set to be the fourth entry in Subway a series of games based on the novels of Dmitry Glukhovsky, this time using the VR format for an unprecedented immersion in the Moscow metro. After hanging out of the mind of a passionate author, Subway the series understandably has a reputation for emotional and thought-provoking storytelling that could work just as well in other media formats.




In an interview with Game Rant, Subway author Dmitry Glukhovsky discussed his work on the series and Awakening the subway especially and possibility of potential Subway film or television adaptation. Glukhovsky also talked about what the experience of writing for the game was like Awakening the subway differs from writing a novel, instead feeling more akin to screenwriting.

There may still be hope for a Metro 2033 movie

When asked if he was considering admission Subway Glukhovsky noted that he was trying to get a film rights deal for Subway as early as 2006. Despite Subway A film adaptation has since seen many successful plays and novels, so it has not been realized yet. That said, Glukhovsky hinted at some potential hopeful news on that front, but couldn't divulge any concrete data.

Glukhovsky mentioned that as a writer, writing video games has more similarities to film than to novels. Both games and movies need a soundtrack, a cast, a script, a camera, and of course an engaging, coherent plot. When writing a novel, Glukhovsky says authors can experiment much more with the storytelling than in a video game or film, especially when it comes to structure.


I think writing for a game is closer to writing for a movie for me, because the story in general, when you're creating the overall arc and plot, it has to be clear and compact. When you're writing for a book, you can really just improvise, and you probably don't even know exactly what's going to happen to your main character, you just kind of understand what the final station is for that character, and then what you want to convey thematically, right?

Whereas when you're writing a movie script that you need to structure, you understand that this is exactly the curve of emotions you want your character to go through. So I'd say it's more sophisticated. Writing a video game is always closer to that. It has to go through some emotions, right?

Although not originally intended, Glukhovsky sees the potential Subway to be a transmedia engine capable of delivering valuable experiences in a wide variety of formats. Hopefully he will have the opportunity to see that potential realized and fans of the franchise can enjoy a Subway movie, comic or series.
