From nature transformation techniques to dojutsu abilities unique to bloodline limits, exploring what makes each of these jutsus so incredibly powerful and nearly unstoppable when unleashed in the hands of a skilled shinobi, even the most unpredictable ones gives a better understanding of what the Naruto world looks like.

Updated April 21, 2025, by Zackary Wiggs: Naruto graced the screen and the bookshop around the turn of the century. Since then, people all over the world have been tying on their hidden village headbands and talking about the world of ninjas. Whether you were a fan from the early days, or you’ve just gotten hooked on it, there’s never been a better time to enjoy one of the longest and best-rated anime and manga out there. Since the hype doesn’t seem to be dying down anytime soon, it’s best to take revamped look at some of the best and most destructive jutsu in the Naruto world, with special attention to those used by characters used in early and mid-seasons.

Please note that determining the ‘strongest’ jutsu is quite subjective, as a jutsu’s effectiveness and power levels depend greatly on the situation and the user wielding it. A technique that causes widespread devastation may not necessarily be ‘stronger’ than one requiring extreme precision or control.

Consider the rankings as a guided analysis of these iconic abilities, but recognize that even B-rank techniques in the right hands at the right time can overcome or outmaneuver so-called ‘strongest’ S-rank jutsu.

Summoning Jutsus

Friendly Faces

The Toad Summons in Naruto.

Summoning jutsu is a wide term surrounding the various techniques that ninja can perform that summon their allies into battle. These allies usually take the form of monstrous creatures, but can also be spirits or similar sage-like and mythical beings. Doing so often requires a contract between the two parties, signed in blood.

Whether it be from a scroll, or just using a drop of the ninja’s own blood, summoning the ally take

s a good amount of chakra, but doing so can often be a game-changer as the various entities that sign these contracts are usually quite powerful.

Examples include Jiraiya and Naruto’s contracts with the great toad sages, Tsunade and Katsuyu, Orichimaru and Sasuke and their snakes, and Hiruzen Sarutobi and the Monkey King Enma’s contract.

Summoning these creatures is a good way to take out large amounts of weaker forces, traveling quickly, and traversing dangerous terrain, all thanks to their size. Apart from being potent fighters, they have the drawback that they are sentient creatures themselves, and can choose not to be summoned, or even quit the fight early if they see fit.

Amaterasu

The Black Flames

Itachi using his Mangekyo Sharingan to cast Amaterasu.

Named after the radiant Shinto sun goddess, Amaterasu is one deadly Mangekyō Sharingan technique. It creates black flames wherever the user focuses their vision, and these things burn as intensely as the sun itself. Once ignited, the flames turn virtually anything to ash instantly and cannot be put out until their fuel is 100 percent scorched away, making Amaterasu without a doubt one of the most savage and unstoppable attacks in the Naruto universe.

Wielded by none other than Itachi and Sasuke Uchiha, Amaterasu serves as not only a testament to their clan’s formidable power, but also as a reflection of the enduring yet destructive hardships these characters shoulder. The inextinguishable quality of the flames comes to mirror how the Uchiha brothers carry the raw, agonizing trauma of their pasts every single day.

Itachi’s desperate implementation of Amaterasu in critical battles reveals an added dimension to his sacrifices. Meanwhile, for Sasuke, his mastery over Amaterasu’s blistering fury channels his once all-consuming hunger for vengeance and later, his uncompromising conviction to shield his cherished ones.

Chidori (& Variants)

An Assassin’s Technique

Sarada Unleashes Chidori first time against Jigen in Boruto.

A secret and revered technique created by Kakashi Hatake while in his Anbu Black Ops days as a way to create a similarly destructive jutsu to the Rasengan. Since then, he has been secretive on teaching it both due to its destructive power, and its intense use of chakra and resulting stress on the body. Wreathed in lightning, the user thrusts their hand forward at lightning speed with a precise blow.

The Chidori is a potent one-hit attack that Kakashi and his protégé Sasuke both use for assassination blows. It is powerful and fast enough to easily pierce flesh and even armor. Sasuke has modified his use of it to become more powerful, to be able to use it more often, and to invent the Chidori Stream that arcs lighning out at the target from ones own hand as well. This is something that Sasuke has taught his own daughter Sarada.

The name comes from the chirping sound the lightning makes, like a large flock of birds.

12

Rasengan (& Early Variants)

Localized Chakra

Minato hitting Obito with a Rasengan during Naruto's birth.

The other half of the Chidori vs. Rasengan feud. The rasengan is a powerful one-hit jutsu invented by Fourth Hokage Minato. It takes the form of a palm-sized rotating ball of chakra that puts an incredible amount of twisting and pushing force on the opponent. Since then, Jiraiya, Naruto, Konohamaru, and Boruto have all gained access to the jutsu and made various improvements to its size, strength, magnitude, fuel, and base abilities.

Minato often used it in conjunction with his flying thunder god technique to teleport behind the opponent and finish them off with a precise blow. Jirayai saved it for his more fearsome opponents, focusing the chakra ball to a smaller and more dense form.

Naruto and his successors have used the jutsu more liberally, both fusing it with nine-tails chakra, and learning to mix their chakra types with it for various results. It’s similar to the Chidori in use, but the effect of the Rasengan has historically beat out the similar jutsu in various fights in the Naruto series.

Izanagi And Izanami

A Legacy In The Making

Danzo running from Sasuke after using all his Sharingan in Naruto.

Izanagi and Izanami represent two of the most game-changing powers hidden within the fabled Sharingan. Izanagi lets the user basically rewrite reality for a short time, allowing them to miraculously escape fatal blows by turning lethal damage into a fleeting mirage. On the other hand, Izanami does the polar opposite: trapping foes in an endless loop to teach them a karmic lesson, with scarcely any hope for freedom.

Izanagi made a big splash during Danzo’s final showdown against Sasuke, serving as Danzo’s temporary ace up the sleeve. Later, Itachi wields Izanami’s recursive curse to shatter Kabuto’s control and resolve. Both instances underscore the Uchiha clan’s storied legacy of being able to alter destiny itself, which is funny because they simultaneously end up falling victim to fate’s cruelty.

10

Susanoo

Defense And Offense

Susanoo and Nine Tails face off against Jigen in Boruto.

The Susanoo manifests as a massive, human-like entity that shields the user and does their bidding in battle. Think of it like a personal bodyguard deity made of pure chakra. The catch is that only Mangekyō pros who’ve awakened their eyes can summon Susanoo as their guardian. This grand beast comes with all the bells and whistles too, wielding ethereal weapons and upgrading into multiple forms, each more jaw-dropping than the last.

The technique is most famously utilized throughout the series by highly skilled figures like Itachi Uchiha, Sasuke Uchiha and Madara Uchiha during pivotal confrontations. Each user’s personalized Susanoo form and weapons contribute to the frequent portrayal of these avatars’ momentous clashes, shaping landscapes and turning tides single-handedly. Hands down, one of the most visual, stunning and impactful abilities the Sharingan has to offer.

9

Mitotic Regeneration

Healing Like No Other

Tsunade from Naruto in front of the War arc backdrop.

One of the few healing and rejuvenation jutsu that is shown in depth in the Naruto world. Mitotic Regeneration is the powerful and secretive technique used by Tsunade, which should say something considering she and her retinue are impressive healers by nature. It takes the form of black tattoos that appear across the users body.

Upon being used, a huge amount of chakra is used to speed up the healing process of the body. This means wounds will visibly close in seconds, muscles and bones mending as well. Despite the huge amount of chakra used, the stress it puts on the body reduces the lifespan of the user, making it as much of a liability as it is a useful jutsu.

8

Tengai Shinsei

From The Sky

A meteor landed on the ground from the Tengai Shinsai.

Tengai Shinsei, translated loosely to ‘Heavenly Obstacle Quaking Star’, is a technique pioneered by Madara Uchiha through the use of his ocular powers to summon and manipulate meteorites. He then redirects these massive projectiles to descend and impact the landscape with enough kinetic force to cause annihilation on a scale rarely matched. Basically, it lets old Madara-sama use his magical eyes to yoink massive meteorites from space and redirect them to rain down annihilation.

Naruto: 8 Characters Who Would Make Great Hokage

These Naruto characters would be great Hokage.

Madara was clearly going for drama when he busted out this meteor storm during the Fourth Great Ninja War. It definitely struck awe (and abject horror) in our heroes as they scrambled not to get bombarded into oblivion. It’s a devastating attack that’s hard to dodge, and also looks pretty impressive as well.

7

Eight Gates Released Formation

Pushing The Limits

A diragram of the 8 gates in Naruto.

The Eight Gates are a series of tenketsu in a person’s chakra system. By opening these gates, a shinobi can tap into ludicrous reserves of strength and speed for battle. We’re talking like fist-through-your-chest levels of power. Downside is, it basically overclocks your body so much that limbs start disintegrating from the strain. Small price to pay though.

Might Guy, a master of taijutsu, is the most notable user of the Eight Gates. Who wasn’t moved to manly tears when he went up against Madara with this technique? The man was out there red-misting meteors like a champ. He was also nearly reaching the awe-inspiring Ninth Gate, and promptly rewarded with the inability to ever walk properly again. But hey, anything for friendship, right? Guy’s spirit here perfectly embodies ‘work hard, never give up, and you too, can dropkick cosmic supervillains in the face’.

6

Reaper Death Seal

A Seal You Can’t Break

The grim reaper standing behind Orochimaru in Naruto.

Another powerful and obscure juts passed down by Minato. The Reaper Death Seal jutsu is important to the plot of Naruto for multiple instances. Using it causes the user to become a gateway for the grim reaper, or god of death. The Reaper reaches through the user, grabbing the soul of the opponent and the user and consuming them both together, killing both parties.

Minato himself used it, with a twist, to seal the soul of the Nine-Tailed Fox in Naruto’s body. The Third Hokage then used it in his fight with Orochimaru as he found himself unevenly matched between him and Enma and Orochimaru using his resurrected predecessors. Although he wasn’t successful, he was able to paralyze Orochimaru’s arms for some time.

5

Atomic Dismantling Jutsu

Gone With The Wind

A character in Naruto preparing thei atomic dismantling.

The Atomic Dismantling Jutsu, also known as Dust Release, is a kekkei tōta, a rare and advanced form of nature transformation. This technique disintegrates anything it touches at a molecular level, making it one of the most fearsome and unstoppable attacks in the Naruto universe.

The Third Tsuchikage, frequently pulls out this grisly technique to remind his foes why you don’t mess with Iwagakure. Its ability to obliterate almost anything highlights the strategic importance of the Tsuchikage in battle, especially during the Fourth Great Ninja War. Plus, by annihilating at a subatomic scale, Dust Release definitely highlighted the oft-overlooked strategic importance of the Tsuchikage role.

4

Edo Tensei

Back From The Dead

The akatsuki being resurrected with edo tensai in Naruto.

Nothing screams forbidden no-no jutsu quite like Edo Tensei, the dreaded Reanimation technique invented by Tobirama Senju. Developed by Tobirama Senju, the Second Hokage, it involves summoning the souls of the deceased and binding them to living bodies, effectively granting them immortality and regenerative abilities for the duration of the jutsu.

The Fourth Great Ninja War quickly turned into a grudge match free-for-all when Kabuto and Tobi started spam reanimating deceased heavy-hitters to wreak havoc. And who can forget when Orochimaru decided to bring the Hokages back to life. It is a jutsu with severe moral implications, but plenty of power behind it.

3

Indra’s Arrow

The Best Of Both Worlds

Indra shooting their arroow in the sky in Naruto.

Behold, Indra’s Arrow, the excessively extra finishing move passed down through generations of Uchihas from their ancestor Indra. This ludicrous jutsu manifests as a gigantic lightning arrow strong enough to skewer mountains. It’s created by combining Susanoo with Tailed Beast chakra, almost like using the demons as AAA batteries for an overpowered spirit weapon.

Up until the climatic showdown between Naruto and Sasuke, we’d only heard legends of Indra’s Arrow. But then Sasuke whipped it out as his trump card, proving he’d surpassed all previous Uchihas. Charging up a bolt so humongous it ripped holes in the atmosphere showed real commitment. Of course, Naruto responded by channeling his Nine-Tails Chakra into an equally outrageous attack (which we will be talking about next), making their duel one for the history books.

2

Tailed Beast Ball Rasenshuriken

The End Of An Era

Naruto in his 9-tails form using the rasenshuriken.

The Tailed Beast Ball Rasenshuriken is a unique and highly advanced technique developed by Naruto Uzumaki. It represents a fusion of two of the most powerful jutsus: the Rasenshuriken and the Tailed Beast Bomb (Bijuu Dama). It’s essentially a weaponized hurricane filled with the combined force of all Nine Tailed Beasts.

Naruto first uses the Tailed Beast Ball Rasenshuriken during his final battle against Sasuke Uchiha. This battle is the climax of their long-standing rivalry and ideological differences. The technique is used as a counter to Sasuke’s Indra’s Arrow, an equally powerful and symbolic attack. This extravagant jutsu fusion was the perfect manifestation of Naruto’s spirit, never giving up and finding strength through believing in his friends.

In terms of narrative impact, the use of this technique highlights the themes of friendship, cooperation, and understanding that are central to the Naruto series. It contrasts with the more solitary and power-focused approach of Sasuke, representing a culmination of the series’ exploration of different paths to power and the consequences of those choices.

1

Infinite Tsukuyomi

Years Of Pain

Itachi with multiple dead uchihas behind him while he has his sharingan activated from Naruto.

This one’s an extremely powerful genjutsu that originates from the Rinnegan, one of the most revered dojutsu in the Naruto world. This jutsu casts an illusion so strong that it can ensnare the entire world, trapping all of humanity in a dreamlike state. However, it requires the Ten-Tails and the God Tree to perform, making it a jutsu of mythical proportions.

Of course, something this cosmically overpowered would come back to haunt the nations during the Fourth Great Ninja War. This whole thing is masterminded by, you guessed it, Madara Uchiha, who manifests the divine Infinite Tsukuyomi as the cornerstone of his ‘peace through mass brainwashing’ master plan. The concept in itself is so screwed up that you kinda get why no one else decided to go through with this. But yes, the scale and ambition of this jutsu, along with its philosophical implications for peace and freedom, make it one of the most significant in the series.
