New God Of War franchise in development at Sony Santa Monica

A former Sony Santa Monica head writer's LinkedIn profile reveals that the studio is currently creating a “new franchise” in the God of War universe.

Honestly, there has never been a more exciting time to be a God of War fan. Not only are all the games still as revered as ever, but the series has a very strong future ahead of it, thanks to confirmation that the classic trilogy will be getting a remake from Sony Santa Monica in the future. As if that wasn't enough, there's also a studio other another game to consider.

While we all thought Cory Barlog's next game would be space-themed, it's been widely rumored that he's actually working on a new God of War game. Although some are reporting that it's another Kratos game that could take him to Egypt (although God of Mischief sounds a lot cooler), that may not be the case in the end.

God…?

Kratos poses in the Steam version of God of War Ragnarok.

As ResetEra user nolifebr pointed out and originally discovered St. Elmo's Fire, the LinkedIn profile of Lauren Signorino, a former lead writer at Sony Santa Monica, just gave us our most concrete idea yet of what the studio's mysterious next game is — “a new franchise in the God of War universe.”

I understand the remake of the original God of War, but the entire trilogy feels like overkill

Sony Santa Monica has confirmed that it will remake three legendary God of War titles.

Signorino's profile appears to have been deleted or made private since this discovery, but screenshots of it are flying around.

This suggests that the next game in the series may end up not starring Kratos or Atreus and instead focus on a new character and possibly a new realm. While part of me he wants To say that this supports the idea of this being a Loki-centric game, Bluepoint's canceled God of War live-service title would have starred Atreus, which makes me think it's something else entirely.

Interestingly, Signorino's mention of a new franchise also backs up what Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier said about the game acting like a new IP but actually not. If the next God of War stars a different character or changes things significantly, then sure feel like a different type of God of War game but still in the same universe.

We'll have to wait and see when Sony Santa Monica reveals the game (which could be as early as this summer), but it sounds like PlayStation has pretty big plans for the franchise, even if Kratos isn't necessarily a part of it.
