- Rumors suggest that the Switch 2 could have more consoles than the original Switch at launch.
- Nintendo's patents suggest that the Switch 2 may have improved features.
- The Switch 2 has already been confirmed as backwards compatible.
A new rumor suggests that the sequel to Nintendo Switch could have had many more consoles available at launch than its predecessor. Details are still scarce, especially considering Nintendo hasn't even officially revealed the Switch 2 yet, but one user on the Nintendo Famiboards forum claims to have insider information. While they didn't offer a specific number, they did say that the next-gen Switch will have a much larger release than the first.
Nintendo has confirmed that it will announce the Switch 2 by March 2025, when its current fiscal year ends. Other than that, however, the company has been silent about the console. Its official name, specifications, games and release date are still under speculation. In the midst of that silence, the rumor swirled almost continuously.

Resident Evil 9 and The Switch 2 are strangely in the same boat
Resident Evil 9 and Switch 2 rumors have put the highly anticipated releases in a surprisingly similar situation.
This latest rumor comes from Famiboards user ninspider. Early on November 20th, ninspider posted a cryptic message on the Switch 2 speculation thread. The message at first looks like gibberish, but when translated from Base64 – binary code – it says that Nintendo plans to produce around 2.5 times more Switch 2 consoles than the original Switch release for American market. With the Switch becoming the best-selling Japanese console of all time, this could mean that the Big N has high expectations for its follow-up system.
The Switch 2 could break new ground
Whether or not the ninspider actually has it remains to be seen. Still, it would make sense for Nintendo to increase production on the Switch 2 compared to its first hybrid console. The original Switch was difficult for some gamers to get their hands on when it first came out, and buyer enthusiasm for the new technology has only grown since then. Consider how PlayStation Portal sold out in many territories prior to its release.
Regardless of how many systems they make at launch, Nintendo could make some big moves with their next console. If Nintendo's recent patents are anything to go by, the new system could feature rotating cable connectors, improved Joy-cons and a more functional user interface. One of the few confirmed details is that the Switch 2 will be backwards compatible, making it easier to bridge between consoles. This could also mean that the hardware improvements in the Switch 2 accessories could benefit gamers still using the first-gen Switch, though that's also just speculation at this point. While much is still unclear, fans will likely learn more over the next few months as the fiscal year draws to a close.
