Nintendo has officially revealed the best-selling games on the Switch and Switch 2 eShop in Japan, with a pair of 2025's most popular releases leading the pack. 2025 was a banner year for Nintendo, as the developer not only welcomed the launch of several highly anticipated games, but also its latest home console. Nintendo officially debuted the Switch 2 in June to huge success, and has already packed the successor to the landmark Nintendo Switch with popular games like Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bananaand much more.
Nintendo saw plenty of reasons to celebrate in 2025, with its new console hitting impressive marks. The Switch 2 has enjoyed solid numbers both in Japan and worldwide since its debut in June, with the Switch 2 surpassing 6 million units sold worldwide in less than two months. Mario Kart World it also saw huge success as the Switch 2's flagship launch title, selling over 1 million physical copies in Japan within a month of its debut. Now, Mario Kart World and the latest Pokemon the game is among Nintendo's biggest hits in 2025.

Nintendo reveals Japan's best-selling Switch and Switch 2 games
Nintendo has officially revealed the 20 best-selling digital games of the year in Japan for both the Switch and Switch 2 eShops. Nintendo's latest console saw its launch star take the crown Mario Kart World topping the sales charts on Switch 2 in Japan. The top tiers of the Switch 2 sales charts were filled with other console stalwarts, Pokemon Legends: ZA in 2nd place follows Kirby Air Riders and Donkey Kong Banana. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment also finished in the Top 10 on Switch 2 at #7, while almost half of the Top 20 were Nintendo Switch 2 Editions.

Japan's Switch eShop similarly saw one of Nintendo's 2025 highlights top the list. Pokemon Legends: ZA getting 1st place on console. Nintendo's legacy platform boasts plenty of variety in its Top 20, with mainstays like Minecraft, Super Mario Party Jamboreeand Mario Kart 8 Deluxe ranking in the Top 10. Tamagotchi Plaza it did well in Japan, taking second place, despite not doing well outside its home region. Square Enix's remake also secured a Top 5 ranking in Japan Dragon Quest 1 and 2 HD-2D Remake it finished at #4 on the Japanese Switch charts.
Nintendo's sales charts mix new releases with old favorites
The set of games found on top sellers Switch and Switch 2 includes a lot of expected names. Pokemon Legends: ZA With the release of the Switch and Switch 2, it almost secured the top marks, falling only to the very popular Mario Kart World on a newer console. The Inazuma Eleven the franchise was typically popular in its home region, finishing 8th and 5th on Switch and Switch 2, respectively. Longtime Nintendo stalwarts also continue to hold their own in the Top 20 with games like the aforementioned Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate still gives the numbers.
Nintendo looks set to wrap up a stellar 2025 for the gaming juggernaut, with plenty more to come in early 2026. Animal Crossing: New Horizons will make its long-awaited jump to the Switch 2 in January, along with a free update to the life simulation game. Nintendo is also set to release two highly anticipated first-party games in the first few months of the year. Mario tennis fever in February and Pokemon Pokopia in March. Plenty of big-name ports are also planned for the Switch 2, including Final Fantasy 7 Remake on January 22 and Yakuza Kiwami 3 on February 12, among others. Nintendo and Switch 2 fans should have a lot to look forward to as the studio rings in the new year.
