One Piece Teases A New Devil Fruit Awakening in the Elbaf Arc

The concept of devil fruit awakening was first introduced in the Dressrosa arc One pieceand since then, new characters with awakened powers have appeared frequently. Elbaf just introduced fans to another potentially awakened Devil Fruit user in the Straw Hat Pirates Doctor, Chopper. With his powers strong enough to counter even Imu's Domi Reversi, Chopper could have just been a hidden Awakened Zoan all along, and there is very strong evidence to suggest that his use of his Devil Fruit has been strange for a very long time.

Assessing the need for new revivals against Imu

New Awakenings Against Imu Devil Fruit Chopper One Piece

One Piece's Final Saga brings to the fore the strongest characters fighting for supremacy, and among them is the sovereign of the world, Imu. It goes without saying that Imu is one of the most important characters in the final saga, and among the antagonists, she's easily the one who deserves the most attention in the Elbaf Arc.

Imu and his Saint Knights have been incredibly active and it is clear that the power they possess is absolutely immense. Imu in particular has a strength that is hard to match in the world of One Piece. New powers are needed for the straw pirates and their allies to compete with such power. As such, Devil Fruit Awakening will play an important role in this battle as it is one of the most ingenious ways to further strengthen already powerful fighters.

Why Chopper Secretly Awakened The Hito Hito no Mi

Chopper Secretly Awakened Hito Hito no Mi one piece

The Elbaf arc of One Piece strongly suggests that Chopper is able to use the power of the Devil Fruit Awakening. As already shown in the story, Chopper ate the Hito Hito no Mi a long time ago when he was a baby reindeer and eventually joined the Straw Hat Pirates. Chopper's Devil Fruit use was quite unique in the fact that he could consume certain drugs he called Rumble Balls and push his Devil Fruit beyond all limits.

By consuming three Rumble Balls before the timeskip, Chopper was able to access the Monster Point power, which gave him a monstrously powerful form strong enough to one-shot even the likes of CP9. After the timeskip, Chopper gained conscious control over Monster Point's power and can trigger it with just one Rumble Ball. In the Wano Country arc, Chopper even managed to extend the duration of his Monster Point, and in Elbaf it is clear that Chopper was even able to use the power of his Devil Fruit to fight Imu's Domi Reversi. It is obvious that Chopper's Devil Fruit powers have grown even more, and the fact that he was able to counter Imu's powers suggests that he has secretly awakened his fruit, as he is now able to affect those around him with his fruit powers.

How the Human Fruit Fights Imu's Domi Reversi

To understand how Human-Human Fruit was able to counter Imu's Domi Reversi, we need to understand what Devil Fruit Awakenings can do. While Oda has yet to explain all of the Devil Fruit Awakenings, it is clear that some of them allow the user to affect things other than themselves. In Chopper's case, the Hito Hito no Mi allows him to turn into a human-human-reindeer hybrid, but if the fruit was eaten by a human, he would become more knowledgeable and able to grasp his humanity according to Oda himself.

I guess you could say it means like getting your true spirit back or something. So basically people will live like people. Good. I guess you could say that. — Eiichiro Oda

The fact that the giants turned into demons and were able to recapture their humanity after being hit by Chopper suggests that he can affect not only himself but others around him. This also now means that Chopper is completely immune to Domi Reversi, plus his attacks can turn those who have been turned into demons back into humans by allowing them to regain their humanity. This clearly suggests the use of Devil Fruit Awakening, which affects things other than the user's own body.

At this point, Chopper is very powerful. In the Wano Country arc, Chopper was strong enough to resist the Queen for a significant amount of time before being saved by Sanji. Clearly, he should be strong enough to fight elite Yonko officers directly under commanders such as Tobi Roppo.

With his newly awakened powers and the ability to reverse Imu's powers, Chopper is now even stronger than ever before and is likely to continue his evolution as well. Chopper's abilities should take him to a level where he can compete with Yonko Commanders soon, and this power of his will certainly be needed in the final saga.

One Piece Chapter 1178 will be available to read on Manga Plus on March 29, 2026.
