Review on Steam they are a very important factor that has a huge impact on how well a game does commercially. Good reviews bring in more players and bad reviews turn them away. But a negative rating doesn't always mean that the game is completely unplayable. It turns out that there are quite a few decent titles that manage to have enough positives to be enjoyable despite their red Steam scores.
When it comes to open world genre, it can be incredibly difficult to create a compelling world that is full of life or has enough content for players to enjoy it for extended periods of time. Many developers have tried and failed when trying to build a game within one of the most popular genre spaces. Despite their less-than-desirable reception, these games still manage to provide fun experiences, even if they are a bit rough.
Wild West Dynasty
Cowboy lifestyle simulation
- Release date: 22 August 2024
- Developer: Moon Punch Studio
- Platforms: PC
Wild West Dynasty is an incredibly immersive open-world game that transports players to the brutal American Midwest and forces them to survive against both the environment and the threats within it. Players must manage and expand their settlement, build individual structures to convince others to join, and slowly create a bustling city full of people with needs and desires.
Some of the biggest complaints about the game are about its optimization and the bugs that plague the experience. It can be a little frustrating when things break or the game crashes, but when things are going smoothly, the actual core loop of exploring, crafting, and decorating is quite satisfying, especially given the scale of the world and the fact that it's coming from a small indie developer.
Edge of the Universe
Terraria meets intergalactic exploration
Edge of space is a 2D survival sandbox that throws players into an alien world with nothing but a suit on their back to help them survive. The world is large and full of danger, forcing players to quickly hunt for resources and equip themselves to travel further and face more challenging enemies lurking around every corner.
There's surprising depth in terms of items and building paths, giving players more than enough content to explore without ever feeling too overwhelmed. Although the game was widely criticized for feeling unfinished and more Terrariums clone than a unique project, the core of the game is distinct enough to give it a try.
Growtopia
Building the world together
- Release date: March 7, 2024
- Developer: Ubisoft Abu Dhabi
- Platforms: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, macOS, iOS, Android
Growtopia is an MMO adventure that allows players from all over the world to come together and build anything they can imagine. Players can build mini-games or small houses and, with enough ambition and time, create entire cities full of people communicating and sharing ideas for the next big project.
There are quite a few server connectivity issues, bots, and developer criticism at Ubisoft, which has pulled the review score into the negative realm. This still makes the game fun enough to enjoy with friends and offers the perfect place to rest for those who enjoy simple building fun.
Life Is Feudal: MMO
Bringing the Middle Ages into modern times
- Release date: January 12, 2018
- Developer: LTG
- Platforms: PC
Life is Feudal: MMO comes from a series of medieval games, each containing different gameplay concepts to build an authentic medieval world. In this case, players can build villages into an empire, participate in large-scale PvP battles, and conquer entire countries. The game has so much freedom that with enough imagination, basically anything is possible.
The negatives come from how the free-to-play model morphed into a monthly subscription, alienating many die-hard fans and generating a lot of hate. The developers have since released a newer title titled Life is Feudal: Arden, that tries to improve on the already vast world of the original MMO, but for people looking for an authentic medieval world to explore and mold to their will, the studio's first attempt remains entertaining to this day.
X Rebirth
Business across space
- Release date: November 15, 2013
- Developer: Egosoft
- Platforms: PC, macOS, Linux
X Rebirth is a sprawling space simulator that has almost everything a player could want from a game of its kind. There are very intense ship battles, a trade mechanic that is built on an in-depth economy, and much more. Players are given all the freedom they need to explore and fight for their place in the galaxy.
A lot of the issues come from a buggy state at launch, but also some glaring omissions that make certain aspects of the game difficult to enjoy. It is similar to the game No Man's Skywhere there is an idea and ambition, but the execution just doesn't quite hit the spot. follow-up, X4: Basics, manages to deliver on many more of these promises, but for those who prefer a more old-school feel, X Rebirth it still manages to capture the essence of a truly open simulator, with just a few issues here and there.
Ancient Dimensions
A unique isometric survival experience
- Release date: January 7, 2025
- Developer: HEADSTONE STUDIO
- Platforms: PC
Ancient Dimensions is an interesting survival crafting game that has a lot going for it, both visually and in terms of gameplay. The top-down view changes how survival mechanics work, as players can see more of the world at once, which can provide important information on how to avoid enemy encounters and find hidden resources without having to hunt up close.
The game is still in early access, which comes with the potential for significant changes, but the biggest issues here are related to bugs and core gameplay loops that are unfinished. In the current state, Ancient Dimensions it has a lot of potential to grow into a beautiful open world survival game and given enough time could potentially be another redemption story that proves all the haters wrong.
The greed of man
Creating an underground empire
- Release date: July 10, 2023
- Developer: NONE
- Platforms: PC
The greed of man transports the player to a city full of opportunities, some ethical and some very illegal. Starting with next to nothing, players must loot and find resources to get their underground business off the ground, slowly transforming from a humble nobody to a criminal mastermind who rules an entire empire, managing everything from production to product shipping.
However, despite a pretty decent following, the developer has been portrayed in a very bad light for his actions and decisions regarding the development and marketing of the game. This makes the product that exists today still quite enjoyable. While there are some issues with both the game and the creator, it's free-to-play so it's still worth a try.
