In the bustling space action RPG market, Mass Effect the franchise stands head and shoulders above its competition. This is true even after disappointment Mass Effect: Andromeda; Mass Effect has long been a gaming touchstone, a sci-fi adventure against which others in the genre are always measured.
For good reason, as so many action RPGs with sci-fi trappings are clearly inspired Mass Effect. This appears to be the case with s The Expanse: Osiris Rebornan upcoming space RPG developed and published by the company Pioneer studio Owlcat Games. As its name suggests, The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is based on Area book and TV series, which in themselves are rather similar Mass Effect in some ways, from their focus on humanity as newcomers to the galactic scene to their emphasis on the camaraderie of space crews. Indeed, if Area is being adapted into a video game format, there's probably no better clue than BioWare's space opera.
What is The Expanse: Osiris Reborn about?
Area the novels and TV show centers on James Holden and his crew who find themselves up against a mysterious alien force called the Protomolecule. The books and shows hone in on this existential, space-horror combat with a bit of space diplomacy. However, Osiris reborn will seemingly have little to do with this plot.
IN Osiris rebornplayers take control of a mercenary captain using Pinkwater Security. While leaving the Eros station on shore, the player and their crew reluctantly become embroiled in a mysterious conspiracy throughout the solar system. The finer details of the plot have not been revealed at this time, but it is clear that the main characters Area (James, Naomi, etc.) will not play central roles.
he said that Osiris reborn is said to take place alongside the events of the books and show. According to Owlcat, Osiris rebornThe story runs parallel to the main one Area a storyline spanning the first two books, or the first two and a half seasons of the series, if you will. This suggests that the events of these early chapters will affect the story of the game. At the very least, a tenuous diplomatic commitment between the various human civilizations at this point AreaThe timeline will likely inform the gaming world.
Owlcat said players will see “familiar faces” in it. Osiris reborneven teasing that some actors from the TV show will reprise their roles. The developer did not reveal what characters and actors will appear.
The Expanse: Osiris Reborn has RPG systems similar to Mass Effect
Mass Effect is all about choice and The Expanse: Osiris Reborn claims to be no different. In an interview with IGN, Owlcat Games explicitly named Mass Effect franchise as a major influence on the game, although the developer has hinted that it will be even more ambitious and rich than BioWare's classic RPGs:
…while still having a similar target audience, we provide more options and focus more on a modern approach where you can create your own play style, create your own experience through the game, which in many ways separates us from the mechanical decisions of Mass Effect.
That's certainly a bold claim, and it puts Osiris reborn in direct conversation – and competition – with Mass Effect. How well Owlcat handles its choice-based storytelling and action RPG systems compared to BioWare remains to be seen, but much of the information already released about the game suggests key similarities. For example, Osiris reborn will allow players to customize the gender and appearance of their protagonist and choose from three races/backgrounds:
-
Earther: Humans grow up on a distant future Earth.
-
Martian: Descendants of humans who colonized Mars, characterized by unusual height and lower bone density due to lower Martian gravity.
-
Belter: Working-class people who were born and raised in or around the Belt, the asteroid belt in the outer part of the Solar System. They are generally taller and thinner than Martians due to the even lower gravity in their home environment.
Something particularly exciting The Expanse: Osiris Reborn thus the physical differences of the three nations will be shown. In the TV show, Earthlings, Martians, and Belters look roughly the same, despite being described as physically different in the books. Apparently it won't be in this one Osiris rebornwhich is free from many of the show's practical limitations. No matter what background a player chooses, we're sure to find a degree of variety in the squad mechanics that provide another parallel to Mass Effect.
The Expanse: Osiris Reborn will have combat similar to Mass Effect
Shades Mass Effect get off at Osiris rebornalso fight. Players can bring two team members into battle and issue tactical orders while engaging in real-time firefights. Interestingly, and potentially the cause of some controversy, Osiris reborn it looks like a cover shooter that encourages the player to seek cover behind walls, boxes and the like, and controls the battlefield with slow and methodical movement rather than running and gunning.
At the same time, Owlcat Games introduced a more dynamic and holistic companion system, as anyone not on the immediate mission team will “remotely support”, with tech-disable and distraction being named as two possible features. This suggests that even “unequipped” team members will affect gameplay, which is an exciting twist Mass Effect formula.
Will The Expanse: Osiris Reborn have romance?
Mass Effect fans can take solace in that Osiris reborn it will include romance options, though much like the rest of the game at this point, this feature is shrouded in mystery. But Owlcat Games has made it clear that romance will play a role in the game, pointing towards romance systems in Pioneer as an example of what viewers can expect from it Area adaptation. With so much in common between Area and its inspiration, it's definitely a game Mass Effect fans should watch closely.
