Overwatch Season 2 map voting changes explained
Now, Overwatch is gearing up to launch its second season, and with it comes some major improvements to the map voting system. Featured on the Director's Take blog Overwatch Game Director Aaron Keller, these upgrades to the Map Voting system will arrive in Reign of Talon Season 2 on April 14th.
-
Losing games on new or redesigned maps in Competitive will result in a smaller progression rating penalty.
-
If an overwhelming majority of players vote for a map, that map automatically wins the vote.
-
The “Random Map” button gives players the option to vote for a random map in addition to the three offered.
-
Icons on each map card indicate whether a team is playing offense or defense.
-
Backend map recency adjustments so that maps that receive some votes aren't as buried as those that don't, meaning a player's favorite maps are shown more often.
While all of these changes are beneficial for fans, the new and reworked map forgiveness in Competitive is especially relevant. Each season during Reign of Talon is supposed to have at least one new or redesigned map. With updates to the Antarctic Peninsula in season 2, a Japanese night is planned Overwatch Season 3 and Island and Atlantic Arcology at some point after, this feature in particular will get a lot of use.
Improvements to the social system and hero bans are coming to Overwatch in 2026
The Overwatch The Director's Take blog also introduced some improvements to the social system. For starters, the Post-Match Accolades system replaces the existing endorsements in Season 2. After a match, fans will be taken to a 3D landing page to vote for the MVP from either team and can even engage in post-match banter in voice chat with the other team. This new system resembles the popular election cards from before Overwatch 2 era and should give players more opportunities for recognition in big games.

Some upgrades come to the Hero Ban system Overwatchalso. While nothing is set in stone, Blizzard is looking at ways to expand the sharing of information about hero preferences during the voting phase, and is even considering a fifth Lobby Ban slot, chosen based on a vote by both teams and independent of role limits. These changes are in the early stages of development, likely arriving much later in 2026 and subject to change, but fans can expect the Hero Bans system for Competitive Play to be tweaked sometime this year.
