Last generation Sony console, PlayStation 4just received a surprise new update on the heels of the latest PSSR update for the PlayStation 5. After its initial announcement in 2013, the PlayStation 4 took the gaming world by storm, showcasing a more confident Sony coming out of the gate after the slow-burn success of the PS3. After revitalizing the platform, Sony carried its late-life momentum into the PlayStation 4 with a less complex system architecture that made development easier for consumers compared to its competitor, the Xbox One.
Since its release, the PlayStation 4 has become one of the most successful consoles in gaming history, selling over 110 million units in more than a decade. It has since become the second best-selling PlayStation platform, trailing only the all-time king, the PlayStation 2, and currently ranks among the top five best-selling video game systems of all time. It also boasts a stellar library of games across first, third and indie fronts, many of which can still be experienced thanks to PlayStation 5 backwards compatibility.
PS4 and PS5 will receive new system updates for October 2025
Sony is releasing new system software updates for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 that bring some minor improvements to both consoles.
PlayStation 4 update version 13.50 adds small features that may be the last of their kind
Along with the newly released PSSR update for PlayStation 5, Sony has simultaneously released a new update for PlayStation 4. This new update, version 13.50, is the first update for PlayStation 4 released since version 13.04 in January. Given the console's age and Sony's focus on the PlayStation 5, it's fair to assume that this new update won't include any major new improvements or overhauls to the PlayStation 4's firmware.

The only patch note that Sony has released for this version 13.50 update for PlayStation 4 suggests that it has “improved messages and usability on some screens.” The most notable part of this new release is that, unlike previous PlayStation 4 updates, Sony doesn't mention any “security fixes” this time around. This is usually how Sony indicates that it fixes common exploits that allow players to jailbreak their PlayStation 4 consoles, allowing for hacking, piracy, and home cooking.
Sony's surprise PlayStation 4 update is likely to be one of the last of its kind as the publisher focuses much of its attention on the PlayStation 5. Sony has quietly begun phasing out some of the console's features, including its multiplayer Tournament and Teams modes, which were discontinued in October. Sony has also announced that it will stop offering PlayStation 4 games as a “key benefit” on its PlayStation Plus service, instead focusing its offering on dedicated PlayStation 5 titles.
Alongside console features, several multiplayer and live service games are ending support for the PlayStation 4. HoYovere's Genshin Impact Support for the PlayStation 4 ended in August, and reports suggest that this is only the first domino to fall, with other titles likely to gradually begin dropping support on the last-gen PlayStation machine. So this new update may be one of the last that gamers will receive on the ten-year-old PlayStation 4, as Sony focuses all of its attention and resources on the PlayStation 5.
