Pokemon Airs 30th Anniversary Ad at Super Bowl

It's a simple question that has endured for 30 years and seems to be at the heart of Pokemon's year-long 30th anniversary celebration – “What's your favorite?”

As partially leaked two days ago, The Pokemon Company and several celebrities teamed up for a unique ad that aired during this year's Super Bowl between the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots.

The minute-long ad featured several celebrities detailing their favorite Pokémon before being joined on screen by various creatures in a montage of images.

The featured celebrities and their favorite Pokemon are as follows:

  • Jisoo, Eevee

  • Lamine Yamal, Zygarde

  • Charles Leclerc, Arcanine

  • Young Miko, Gengar

  • Lady Gaga, Jigglypuff

  • Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Luxray

  • Trevor Noah, Psyduck

In addition to the celebrities describing why each particular Pokémon was their favorite, Lady Gaga performed a rendition of Jigglypuff's own song.

“No matter who you are, everyone has a favorite Pokemon. What's your favorite?” read the slogan of the ad.

Pokemon Gold and Silver protagonist with all three starter monsters.

It's been 25 years since the best Pokemon game ever took over the world

Game Freak still hasn't gotten over the shine of Pokemon Gold and Silver.

In addition to the ad, the official Pokemon 30th Anniversary website was also launched online. The launch follows the unveiling of an official logo starring none other than Pikachu, as well as several merchandise activations, all to celebrate the franchise's major milestone.

Currently, fans are encouraged to participate in the Pokémon Go activation

The website, which is simply 30.pokemon.com/en-us, goes on to ask “What's your favorite?” against the backdrop of hundreds of different Pokémon from many generations that defined the franchise.

To further engage, fans are encouraged to download Pokemon Go, or if they're already a Pokemon Go user, then hover over the “What's your favorite?” an in-game card with over 1,000 Pokemon available to take a picture of you and others.

The official website notes that you don't need a Pokemon Go account or login to participate. Simply having the app allows you to show off your favorite Pokemon.

Unfortunately, if you sat through nearly three quarters of a football game plus an extended halftime show hoping to see Gen 10 or a shadow drop of long-requested ports of classic games, you're out of luck.

For now, this appears to be the main focal point of the Super Bowl weekend campaign. However, you won't have to wait long for the next steps, because Pokemon Presents is on the horizon with a leaked date of February 27.

By then, we should hopefully have a better idea of what to expect over the next 10 months. Until then, what's your favorite Pokemon? To me, it's Gengar, so seeing him in a live-action ad was worth the wait.
