Pokemon leaks have ex-Nintendo marketing execs saying it needs to “broaden” its security

Nintendo and Game Freak have been running a pretty leaky ship for the past few years, though the latest batch of Pokemon leaks is probably the most disastrous of them all. Not only was the name of the next generation – Pokemon Wind & Waves – reportedly leaked, but other key details such as the series' release schedule and new projects were shared on social media.

Apparently Nintendo or Game Freak have massive security issues at the moment, which is very surprising when Nintendo is notorious for shutting down anyone they feel has done them harm. He literally has a team of ninjas who are responsible for going after people who leak classified information, though they clearly need to go back to their dojos for more training if these recent leaks are the result of their efforts.

When something big happens at Nintendo, it's always worth checking out what former Nintendo marketing executives Kit Ellis and Krysta Yang have to say about the situation. After being inside for a while, they usually have some interesting insight into what Nintendo might be thinking in a time of crisis. This time, however, the duo is much more critical of how Nintendo seems to be handling its leak problem.

In the latest episode of Kit & Krysta (via GamesRadar ), the pair talk about recent Pokemon leaks and what Nintendo can do to try to prevent something from happening in the future. Ellis begins by explaining that these leaks are most likely extremely “harmful” to Nintendo and that he feels a little sorry for them, but also that the company needs to “really look in the mirror” and realize that they're not great at keeping things a secret.

“Just based on our own experience dealing with leaks at Nintendo, I feel like if something happens, it's going to solidify the same potential leak sites,” Ellis says. “And they keep tightening and tightening the same places. But there are other places that are vectors of leakage that may not be addressed, may not be tightened, and may be growing.”

Ellis goes on to say that Nintendo needs to “broaden the scope of how it thinks about this,” and says that the leaks likely aren't coming from places Nintendo expects them to. Yang also adds to the conversation by revealing some of the anti-leakage measures that were put in place during her time at the company, such as limiting communication with personal and work devices, though Yang says these were “perceived false security” measures that didn't really help.
