The Fallout the series began in 1997, created by developer Interplay Productions, who also published it. It was a gem among Interplay's roster until it eventually fell into the hands of Bethesda Softworks, which released its first serial entry in 2008 with Fallout 3 as part of its Bethesda Game Studios. The rest is history as Bethesda turned it around Fallout franchise into a more recognizable brand. There's even a successful adaptation of the TV show now on Amazon Prime.
The best post-apocalyptic games ever
The post-apocalyptic setting gives the game a certain uniqueness. These titles left a lasting impression on players.
While its post-apocalyptic setting changes between releases, the same set of ideas has been the foundation of the franchise since 2008. post-apocalyptic games they are in some ways more interesting because of their setting, world design, characters, mechanics, and so on. It doesn't have to be better than Fallout in every way, but they definitely have some grander ideas than Bethesda's games.
Atomfall
Leaving the US
Atomfall takes place in an alternate version of the 1960s in rural England. The landscape is ravaged with rusted weapons, machinery and broken buildings, but as an apocalyptic event recently happened, everything is still green.
While Fallout: London exists and is comparable, it's just a fan mod based on Fallout 4. In 2024, the mastermind behind RPG Bethesda, Todd Howard, said Fallout the series will remain in the United States. Anyone hoping in Atomfall– as a Bethesda game will have to keep hoping as the US is at the forefront of their minds.
Death Stranding
The post office is here
Death Stranding has a unique post-apocalyptic setting because it takes place almost all over the US, or at least in a scaled-down version of it. While there are action elements, this game is mostly about courier Sam connecting underground bunkers by delivering packages.
Imagine a Fallout a game set across the US and also about delivering packages. What Todd Howard would like to do with this franchise seems out of whack. Fortunately, there are other gaming visionaries, namely Hideo Kojima, who are always pushing the boundaries of what's possible in a post-apocalyptic setting.

T for Teen – Animated Blood – Violence
Some fans may forget that Fatethe 2014 game, begins on Earth, takes place in a part of the destroyed Russian environment. After a cataclysmic event, most of humanity fled to space or a tower above Earth, as much of the planet became uninhabitable.
The game itself is a first-person shooter where players travel to several planets and defend against various alien invasions. Bethesda already has Fallout– like a space game, Star fieldso there's no way their post-apocalyptic franchise will ever leave Earth. It would be like Bethesda eating its own tail.
Final Fantasy 6
Witness The End
Final Fantasy 6 is where the first major spoiler comes into play, as players have to go through half the game to get to it. This is a landmark title within the framework Final Fantasy franchise because the villains win, the planet is nearly destroyed, and the rest of humanity must hold together what's left. Players must then remember each party member to hope to stop the man who can strike again, Kefka.
7 post-apocalyptic games with unique settings
Post-apocalyptic games are always a lot of fun. Here are some wonderful titles with unique settings that add to the overall atmosphere.
While there were scenes taking place before the bombs were dropped, such as Fallout 4There probably won't be any games that feature gameplay set right after the explosion, or even weeks after it. It would be interesting to see though.
Horizon Zero Dawn
Beautiful Apocalypse
Horizon Zero Dawn is not the first post-apocalyptic game to take place in a beautiful version of the end of the world. It also features a set of enemies unlike anything else in gaming: robot animals. By harvesting their parts, players can upgrade their heroine Aloy with new equipment, or she can even hack robots and turn them into allies.
While there are dangerous machines Falloutlike the Assaultrons, they are nowhere near as complex as the animals in the Horizon Zero Dawnnor are they as difficult to take down as something like Thunderjaw.
The last of us part 1
Apocalypse with a horror theme
The last of us part 1 it also has a beautiful world, but it's not as open as Horizon Zero Dawn is. This is a purely linear adventure and it's hard to imagine Bethesda going that route Falloutespecially with a story so emotionally gripping.
The real strength of this game is the horror and stealth elements. The way the corridors of the infected stalks are haunted, and even the raiders are more treacherous than those in Fallout games. Pure horror Fallout the game could be good, especially if it focused on ghouls, but that seems unlikely.
The Legend Of Zelda: The Wind Waker
Come Sail Away
Many may forget this The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker technically takes place after the post-apocalyptic event that led to the flooding of Hyrule. The rest of life now mostly exists above water, while the Kingdom of Hyrule lies below. Sailing is a big part of the game as Link can explore side islands before venturing into large dungeons to continue the main story.
There aren't many states that Bethesda could use where it makes sense to have the land completely flooded for sailing purposes, except maybe Minnesota, the “Land of 10,000 Lakes”.
Bait and switch
Metaphor: ReFantazio is another game to screw up here to get to the juicy bits. First, this turn-based/action hybrid is a linear RPG, much like an RPG Persona games. It's disguised as a fantasy RPG with a rich tapestry of races, monsters and magic, but there's a big twist towards the end.
8 post-apocalypse games with the best stories, ranked
In addition to engaging gameplay, games like Days Gone and Horizon: Forbidden West offer compelling post-apocalypse stories.
This world was built on the ruins of what used to be modern civilization. Imagine if Bethesda announced a new RPG set in a fantasy world that wasn't The Elder Scrollsand it actually turned out to be a by-product Fallout towards the end. Bethesda would never pull a Metaphor: ReFantaziobut if they did it would be the biggest video game gimmick of all time.
Sandy land
Go hard on vehicles
One of the strangest things on the Fallout of the game is that everything must be explored on foot without horses or vehicles, unless you count the clunky Power Armor. That's the place Sandy land is different. It takes place in a sandy world with no water, but that's what players are tasked with finding.
The players are Beelzebub, a demonic prince who is accompanied by both demons and humans on their quest. Beelzebub has action-based combat, but there are also tanks and mechs that can be piloted for battle purposes, along with cars and monsters that can be mounted on the roads.
Shin Megami Tensei 4
Angels vs Demons
The Shin Megami Tensei the series is usually set in bombed-out versions of Japan and features a war of angels against demons with humans caught in the middle. Among many, Shin Megami Tensei 4, the 3DS turn-based RPG is perhaps the best example of this.
Players basically start out as a celestial samurai, a sworn guardian of all that is good, before being brought down to Earth. To get home, they need to make alliances with human survivors and even some demons who can help them. Fallout is a purely sci-fi series, so adding literal angels and demons or setting the game in Japan probably isn't going to happen.
Upcoming post-apocalyptic games
