PlayStation Plus started the horror season with Alan Wake 2 by joining the basic level at the beginning of the month. As one of the most acclaimed survival horror games of recent years, Remedy Entertainment's second entry in the IP series has received a number of awards, launching the next chapter of the studio's roadmap for Connected Universe. Meanwhile, further additions to the Extra and Premium PlayStation Plus tiers were announced, with Silent Hill, As dusk falls and Until dawn to be the dominant of the new crop.
The four games, taken as a whole, show that Sony is willing to celebrate the season (although there is a case for the recent Resident Evil games coming to PS Plus). Together with Alan Wake 2 and Remake of Silent Hill 2, As Dusk Falls and Until dawn both offer alternative, if no less effective, brands of horror. Most horror fans may have experienced the first, but if not the last two games, then this is a double feature. Until dawn and Like Dusk Falls are cinematic storytelling experiences full of tension, complex characters and plenty of tragedy that fit perfectly into the atmosphere of the season.
PlayStation Plus Extra for October 2025 brings psychological thrills and chills
Until Dawn is a cinematic narrative classic
Super massive Until dawn is an interactive narrative game that can divide players. Some feel that games like this are too close to the movies, but that's also why it's so perfect for the season. PS Plus Extra gives fans the chance to sit down with a loved one and enjoy the chills and thrills, essentially making it a great horror/gaming night via PS Plus. Revolving around investigations and conversations combined with split-second decisions, players follow and shape the story through various branching options. These are often accompanied by plot twists and character revelations that recontextualize some previous details and interactions. Depending on what they do and how fans choose to navigate the story, characters can die and there are multiple possible endings.
Until dawn also featured well-known actors outside of the gaming industry, with household names such as Rami Malik, Hayden Panettiere and Peter Stormarere bringing their looks and talents to the core group of teenagers. As one would expect in such a setting, the teenagers are alone in a mountain cabin and are being pursued by a mysterious stalker. Until dawn it remains one of the best and most memorable games of its nature, so planning to enjoy it for a night or two of spooky season is more than appropriate.
As Dusk Falls covers many of the same intense psychological grounds as Until Dawn
Like Dusk Falls is the debut title from developer Interior/Night. Like Dusk Falls is not a horror work in exactly that way Until dawn is; however, it includes much of the same kind of deep psychological drama and situations. Similar to a film by Quentin Tarantino or Guy Ritchie, Like Dusk Falls focuses on a family who become involved in a heist gone wrong and are captured in rural Arizona in 1998. This easily makes it one of the best and most unique games in the PS Plus Extra catalog.
Like Dusk Falls won the Games for Impact award at The Game Awards 2022 and was featured at the Tribeca Festival in New York.
As the story unfolds from the perspective of both the hostages and the perpetrators, their histories and complex relationships are revealed. Players must put themselves in the shoes of each character, decide how to respond to the dire situation they find themselves in, and deal with the consequences of their actions. Both also offer great replay value as decisions are spread across the story, leading to different nuanced outcomes. Until dawn and Like Dusk Falls they are two sides of the same troubling coin and bring fans harrowing and heartbreaking moments.
This month's two PS Plus Extra hits provide an excellent double feature and are sure to satisfy fans of cinematic narrative thrillers.
