Ryan Coogler is now awarded as one of the best filmmakers of our time. He is best known for his work on Black Panther and his sequel, as well as Creed, but you probably heard a lot about his latest Sinners movie. I certainly have. In fact, I saw nothing but praise for that. Everyone loves sinners.
The sinners not only did not go to expand critical recognition – Metacritic has it to an impressive 84 – but it was also incredibly commercially successful when it financially overcome some of the most famous horror films and consolidated as one of the defining films from 2025.
Spoilers for sinners ahead.I am very glad that this film has received a reception. I think it is amazing that the film The Vampire, which primarily focuses on black characters and stories, took off this way. It is a kind of film that I wish to succeed more often because it tells stories that feel truly exciting, unique stories about times and places and people that are often overlooked.
And yet.
Sorry, I really didn't like sinners
Well, a little. Perhaps it is more accurate to say that I did not like half sinners. As I told many of my friends, sinners feel like his twins – two interconnected, albeit very different, the films sewn into one somewhat cohesive whole. I loved the first half of the sinners. I was completely sold to the stories that were being prepared, many complex characters, and their relationships to myself, and the way the film has portrayed the time and place it is set to. Many great ideas were explored and I was excited to see them spread and made them to their conclusions.
And then Mary, played by Hailee Steinfeld, is bitten by a vampire and the emotional momentum of the film will stop. This was followed by that the action blood bath, one with impressive pieces and effects, yes, but absolutely no solution. The surveys of each character died with them. Every interesting thread remained hanging. The emotional core of the film was thrown out of the window in favor of the soaked gore glasses, and it seemed like a waste of all the complexity listed in the first half of the film.
Especially I was disappointed that the use of music as supernatural power was not examined deeper and more complicated, given that it is the main prerequisite for the film.

What is worth it?
I really wanted to love sinners. I love horror, but more than that, I like to see how horror can increase the unconventional story. Maybe I can wing my disappointment to really enjoy action movies, which is basically how the other half of the sinners felt. More than anything else, it was a reminder that reviews could not guarantee anything.
I wrote again and again that the review of the review means nothing – not in games or in movies. The review, even without deployment, is completely subjective for the reviewer. Most of the reviews of sinners do not mention what I didn't like, or even say they liked it.
I won't throw anger about it. I write critically about things and people constantly disagree with me. For example, take some people angry with me for the fact that the story of Split Fiction is very bad. Now he is filmed in a movie playing Sydney Sweeney, so Hollywood doesn't see things just like me.
The critical consensus, by nature, cannot cover the breadth of an opinion that exists about a particular thing. Many people will think that my takeover of the movie is bad and bad, I'm sure, but I'm entitled to my unpopular opinion, just like you, dear readers. As always, I recommend that you create your own opinion on things instead of assuming that reviews will always reflect your own experience. Michael B. Jordan, who plays twins in a critically recognized vampire film, was supposed to be my film of the year, but here we are.
