Skate season 3 Paywalls in new location and fans are furious

Skate players are up in arms as the upcoming third season is briefly paywalled in a new location after the developers previously promised “no map areas locked behind a paywall”.

We've all been saying this for years, but the new Skate game should have been one of the easiest slam dunks for EA. Instead, it decided to go the route of the live service game, which, while initially quite popular and well-received, struggled to keep its manual running through new seasons.

Not only has the number of players dropped significantly since launch, but it seems like the developers are still making the worst possible decisions that annoy the community even more. However, things have really come to a head in the last 24 hours, as the announcement of Season 3 and the response to the paywall controversy seem like the last straw for many players.

Skateboarding Developers Say 'Plans Must Change' As They Walk Back Promise Of No Paid Places

All this for the Isle of Grom…

Yesterday, the Skate team revealed their plans for the game's third season, which includes an expanded version of the game's tutorial area, the Isle of Grom. Skateboarders have been asking for more places to skate since launch, so for the most part, a new area seems like an easy win, right? Not quite.

If you're looking for another way to give Skate your money, you're in luck.

For some reason Skate locks access to the Isle of Grom for the Premium Skate Pass for over a month as an “extra benefit”. This is despite the team confirming three years ago that no new locations would be placed behind a paywall, which fans were quick to point out in the comments.

When asked what happened to that promise, the Skate team said they launched in early access to build the game with players, “not behind closed doors.” It also said that “plans have to change sometimes” and that's “part of the deal when you build in public” which worked out about as well as you can imagine.

It hasn't exactly been smooth sailing for Skate the past few months, but it really looks like a big turning point for most players. The game's subreddit is completely filled with negative reactions to the announcement and season content, with some even clamoring to speak up.

The new Battlefield 6 map is really good, but it's still a little disappointing after waiting so long.
