Sons of Sparta is officially a hit

God of War: Sons of Sparta is officially emerging as a commercial bright spot for Sony after the cheaper PS5 spin-off hit the key sales chart in February 2026. This appears to have given Sony a remarkable early-year result for the spin-off, suggesting that the company's biggest franchises may have room for more God of War: Sons of Spartastyle games for the foreseeable future.

Developed by Pittsburgh-based Mega Cat Studios in collaboration with Sony's own Santa Monica Studio. God of War: Sons of Sparta was cast on February 12, 2026. It materialized on the PS Store moments after its reveal trailer debuted during the latest PlayStation State of Play showcase. Six weeks later, the 2D metroidvania appears to have captured a significant chunk of new player spending, at least in the United States.

The clearest sign of the spin-off's strong debut so far comes from the latest Circana video game sales chart for February 2026, shared by CEO Mat Piscatella. According to the monthly ranking God of War: Sons of Sparta finished in 14th place in the overall table. It also debuted at number six on the PlayStation-specific chart, which tracks sales of PS4 and PS5 games in the US. Sons of Sparta overcame Ghost of Yotei, Forza Horizon 5and evergreen Marvel's Spider-Man 2 in the cross-platform rankings.

The game's placement is particularly notable because Circana's software charts are organized by dollar revenue rather than unit sales. In practice it means Sons of Sparta achieved this position despite launching at $29.99, well below the standard price associated with many new console releases. Therefore, in order to surpass a full-fledged PlayStation game like Ghost of Yoteihe needed to move more than twice as many units.

As usual, Circana's February 2026 data is US-focused and therefore not necessarily indicative of global trends. Still, he paints God of War: Sons of Sparta in a highly positive light, not least because the U.S. is the world's second-largest video game market in terms of both revenue ($49.8 billion) and players ($224.8 million) in 2025, according to a recent Newzoo study based on industry data.

He had God of War: Sons of Sparta which was released in the first half of 2020, the new metroidvania could probably count on a commercial second wind from Steam at some point in the future. That's no longer certain, however, with a February 2026 report from Bloomberg's Jason Schreier suggesting that Sony is backing away from PC ports going forward. Some titles that were greenlit for PC years ago may still make the jump, but it's unclear if Sons of Sparta made a cut.

Regardless of platform availability, the game's early success suggests that Sony may be more willing to experiment with similar spin-offs in the near future. Such projects are not necessarily smaller-scale single-player titles, although they are part of traditional single-player franchises, as evidenced by the recently announced Gathering of Horizon Hunters from Guerrilla Games.
