It looks like the legal issues between Sony and Tencent may be over for now. A lawsuit sparked by a game called Light of Motiram was settled, claiming that Tencent's game was a clone of the PlayStation Horizon series, and the game was pulled from Steam and the Epic Games Store.
The Game Post provided an update on the lawsuit Sony filed earlier this year after it and the rest of the world got their first look at Light of Motiram. The two sides reached an agreement, and although the details of what was agreed between them are not entirely clear, Light of Motiram will no longer be found on PC shelves.
The game wasn't released or available for pre-order, but you could add it to your wishlist today.
The Motiram light has been removed
Despite the settlement, the sudden disappearance of Light of Motiram from Steam and the Epic Games Store suggests that whatever was agreed between Tencent and Sony, the game will not be released as planned. At least not in the form in which it existed until now. At best, Tencent is going back to the drawing board and trying to turn the game into something not unlike Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West.
Given how similar Light of Motiram was to the Horizon games, it's hard for me to see how the game can be improved to this extent without starting over. Tencent giving up on the game entirely after the trouble it caused seems a more likely option, though that may depend on how much money has been pumped into it so far.
Sony turned down an offer to make Horizon with Tencent
Sony filed a lawsuit against Tencent after calling Light of Motiram a “slave clone,” and it's easy to see why. The company claimed that people could see the game and assume it was related to the Horizon series. This is exactly what happened when the Motiram light was revealed, and I was one of many who saw its images and assumed that a trial would follow soon after.
The lawsuit revealed that the saga actually began in 2024, when Tencent approached Sony about collaborating on the Horizon game. Sony didn't care, but it seems Tencent went ahead and made the game anyway without blessing. Light of Motiram was basically Horizon without Aloy, but if it wants to come back after all that, it's going to have to be a lot different.
Tencent also asked Sony if it could collaborate on a new The Last of Us game after its Horizon proposal was rejected.
