Sony agreed to acquire artificial intelligence company Cinemersive Labs and added a dedicated machine learning team to its PlayStation technology operations. The deal is expected to boost Sony's rendering and streaming capabilities, and could eventually even improve the visual fidelity of its games.
Founded in 2022, Cinemersive Labs is a UK computer vision and machine learning company focused on turning standard images into immersive 3D media for virtual and augmented reality. Its technology is designed to capture, convert, process, store and stream so-called 3D images and video with six degrees of freedom, meaning content that users can view from multiple angles while moving around. The company says its tools support both its own multi-camera capture system and software conversion workflows for volumetric experiences. It also develops interactive 3D photography products, including real-time rendered volumetric visuals and VR viewing applications. Together, these offerings position Cinemersive Labs as an advanced imaging technology company.
Sony is patenting a system that may finally solve multiplayer game pausing issues
Sony is claiming a new patent that could finally solve the problem of players having to pause their multiplayer games and improve gameplay.
Cinemersive Labs joins PlayStation's Visual Computing group
On April 2, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that it had reached an agreement to acquire Cinemersive Labs for an undisclosed sum, marking its 30th majority acquisition since November 2022. SIE plans to add the British company to its Visual Computing Group, an in-house research and development unit focused on machine learning and neural networks for PlayStation's rendering and streaming technology. VCG was formed in 2024 following Sony's acquisition of iSIZE, a British company specializing in neural network applications for video delivery. Specifically, iSIZE was merged with parts of SIE's Game Platform Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) group to form VCG.
Sony did not provide a timeline for completing the acquisition of Cinemersive Labs, suggesting the deal faces several remaining hurdles. For larger and more complex acquisitions, the company typically includes disclaimers and timelines reflecting uncertainty about the regulatory approvals required to complete them.
The future of Cinemersive Labs' Meta Quest is now up in the air
Although primarily a display technology company, Cinemersive Labs is does have one consumer offering in the form of a Parallax app for Meta Quest headsets. Designed for viewing volumetric 3D photos, the app is currently one of the top-rated offerings in the Travel and Exploration section of the Meta Horizon Store, with a 4.7-star user rating as of April 2026. It remains unclear whether Sony's acquisition of Cinemersive Labs will affect the future development of Parallax, which launched in March 2025 as a rare consumer technology showcase from the British company.

If the Cinemersive Labs acquisition brings benefits to consumers, the most likely outcome is that Sony will gain machine learning and computer vision expertise that will help improve the way future PlayStation games render and present images. Based on Sony's plan to add the company to its VCG division, the most likely near-term benefits would be cleaner upscaling, more stable image reconstruction, improved anti-aliasing, and more efficient rendering techniques that make scenes look sharper or more detailed without a comparable increase in hardware requirements. All of this remains hypothetical, however, as Sony hasn't identified any specific use cases or consumer benefits it expects from the deal.
