Sony Greenlights Metal Gear Solid Movie

Among the video games that fans have long hoped would receive a film or television adaptation, Metal Gear Solid is almost certainly at the top of that list. Imagine that dream coming true as the Metal Gear Solid movie has officially been given the green light by Sony.

As first reported by The Hollywood Reporter , the filmmaking duo of Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, best known for their work on Final Destination Bloodlines, have signed Sony to a “massive and expansive first-look deal that covers all of the studio's film brands.”

Most notably, the deal will lead to Sony Columbia Pictures' direct adaptation of Metal Gear Solid, the iconic video game created by Hideo Kojima that is widely regarded as one of the best titles ever made. The pair will be joined by Avi Arad and Ari Arad, who are producing the film.

“Metal Gear Solid was nothing short of a groundbreaking cinematic masterpiece that revolutionized video games forever,” Lipovsky and Stein said in a statement. “We are thrilled and honored to bring Hideo Kojima's iconic characters and unforgettable world to life.”

Beyond the Metal Gear Solid movie, Wonderlab's newly formed company will help develop films for the duo to direct or serve as producers for Sony. The emphasis will be on “wildly entertaining, commercial, genre-bending, character-driven films.”

“Zach and Adam are exciting storytellers, masters of visuals and suspense, and two of the most impressive directors/producers working today,” Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group president Sanford Panitch said in a statement. “With projects across all of the company's film brands, we're so happy to make them a home and proud to have them as part of the Sony family.”

As Kojima is a huge fan of the movies, securing an adaptation of his work was difficult to say the least. In 2006, Kojima revealed at the E3 conference that MGS would indeed receive a live-action adaptation.

“I received many offers to adapt Metal Gear Solid. It took a long time, but we finally agreed,” Kojima said at the time. “Fake facts aside, there's a movie project going on. I've finalized a class A contract with a party in Hollywood.”

However, in 2010, the film stalled. He was later revived in 2012 and underwent years of treatment, with his most notable announcement being that Oscar Isaac would play the role of Solid Snake.

It was quiet until today's news. Which means that 20 years later, Metal Gear Solid finally got its adaptation.
