Many years before the events South of midnightThe story, a young boy named Laurent lived with his mother and father in a small community surrounding the mill. Laurent found that his mother was basically predetermined to die, escaped from home. Laurent found himself in the forest and finally was able to release all the anger and riots that were cooked inside. When Laurent screamed into the darkness, his father threw himself on his side. But rather than let his son express his emotions, Laurent's father told him to push them down.

Laurent's mother died and his father fell into deep depression. When he could not care for his father, Laurent took it on himself to find food and ensure their survival. Throughout Laurent, Laurent continued to push his emotions deep down and refused to afford to mourn his mother's loss.

Laurent's suppressed pain and anger continued to cook until his body could hold it. He confronted the leader of the mill and accused him of the death of his mother. The leader did not take a verbal attack easily and threatened the boy. Laurent's father invaded the front office and, after he saw the quarrel, threw himself to protect his son. The leader reached for the weapon he held behind the table and shot Laurent's father.

Only a young boy, Laurent fell on his knees and darkened. When he came, Laurent saw that his hands were soaked in his blood and that his father put still on the floor in front of him. At that moment, all deep -rooted anxiety, guilt and shame that Laurent pushed down, left his body in one long, uncontrollable cries, a scream so strong that he turned it into Rough, a giant owl with glowing yellow eyes.

Laurent eventually turned back to man, and when a little older, he joined the bootlegger gang at the height of the ban. Laurent tried to live as many normal life as possible, which meant pushing his feelings and forgetting the past. But this approach rarely works.
