After years of anticipation, Subnautics 2the upcoming sequel to the acclaimed survival game of the same name, was formally revealed at the Xbox Partner Preview event on October 17th. Like its predecessor, the game is being developed by Unknown Worlds Entertainment, but will be the first title published by the company since it was acquired by South Korean publisher Krafton in 2021. Now though Subnautics 2 follows on from both originals Subnautics and Subnautica: Below Zeroit doesn't seem to have any narrative connection to either of the two games. Subnautics 2 will take place on an all-new ocean planet, which means a whole host of mysterious creatures and biomes to uncover.
Unknown Worlds Entertainment offers it Subnautics 2 will be the first entry in the franchise to feature a multiplayer mode, as it will be playable with up to three friends. For some fans, that alone is enough to get them excited Subnauticssequel, but it's not the only big improvement planned for the title. According to Scott Macdonald, the animator and developer working on it Subnautics 2Unknown Worlds intends to do Subnautics 2When fully released, the map is much greater in scope and depth than its predecessor. It's a matter of when Subnautics 2 due out in 2025 for PC and Xbox Series X/S, it will launch into early access, so it may take a while to reach that goal.

What Unknown Worlds does Subnautics 2's release is nothing new; first two games in Subnautics the franchise also debuted as Early Access titles. For example, the original Subnautics released on Windows PC in December 2014, before 1.0 was released. The game then made its way to macOS and Xbox One in 2015 and 2016. It wasn't until 2018 Subnautics got out of early access and was subsequently released on the PlayStation 4 as a result. In total, it took around 3 years for the water survival game to fully launch with full features.
Because it was a minor spin-off of the first one Subnautics game, Subnautica: Below Zerothe early access period was significantly shorter. Originally released on Windows PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store in January 2019, just a year after the 1.0 launch Subnautics. The game eventually landed on other platforms in May 2021, namely PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and macOS. Subnautica: Below Zero launched from early access on the same day it was released on consoles. The title essentially spent two years of its development cycle at EA.

On the game's official Steam page, the company states that the long-awaited sequel will likely be in Early Access for around two to three years, judging by the previous works it has developed. As the early access development of the game progresses, the developer promises to add a lot more content to the game.

Without any sudden delays, Unknown Worlds has basically confirmed that its sequel won't be finished until 2027 or 2028. It's unfortunate that fans will have to wait that long, but at least it will give the developers enough time to add more content to the game.
